Maybe you're feeling a type of sympathetic pain made stronger because you're very familiar with your own hands, and how it feels to hurt them, and all those nerves in your hands... there's a lot to sympathize with.
And denailing isn't an old torture favorite for nothing; it's because it causes a big reaction.
And think of how much you'd miss a finger if you lost one.
Goes to show how effective hand horror is.

Just to ask, does eye-gore bother you more or less than hand gore?
