31 Days of Meme Halloween

Today's Theme: Scary Children's Films

Are there any movies, aimed primarily at children, that you thought were a little too scary, unsettling, or frightening? Or even just a moment in a movie? like the banshee in Darby O'Gill and the Little People

THAT.

BANSHEE.

I remember my parents watching that movie on TV when I was very little (around 3 or 4), and the parts with the banshee scared me so much that I had trouble sleeping for a good week or so afterwards. But when I got older I could never remember what it was beyond vague descriptions ("There was an old guy and lady on a cliff? And then a ghost in a green cloak?") until I found the Nostalgia Critic video about Scary Nostalgic Moments and realized THAT WAS IT.

I haven't seen any part of the movie since that time long ago so I probably wouldn't find it scary nowadays, but that was really the only time I remember being so afraid of something from a movie...

Oh I dare

And to think, after all that time being afraid as a kid, I should've known my answer was to just throw fire at it or chase it with farm implements...

I'm very glad I didn't see Dark Crystal until I was college-age.
It would have either terrified me or made my kinks even worse.
Or both.

I also really didn't like the animated Anastasia movie as a kid because I was terrified of dead things and skeletons in particular, and there was way too much Skeleton Rasputin for me. Freaky shit.

This book: http://www.amazon.com/The-Rough-Face-Girl-Rafe-Martin/dp/0698116267

In particular there was a scene with a floating bow and horn (? I think?) suspended in the darkness which for some reason seemed incredibly ominous and frightening to me.

Also, a tv movie version of what I think was Turn of the Screw - I'll always remember this scene where the governess (?) is picking flowers with a little girl in the garden, and then she looks up to see a figure on the roof (which in my memory was pitch black and nearly skeletal, but that doesn't match the story); when she looks down she finds that her hand is bleeding from the rose's thorns (though again, not sure if I made that up). I'm 90% sure from this and other fragments that I remember that it must've been Turn of the Screw, but I think I gradually changed so many things in my head that I can't recognize it any more. At least, I've tried finding this to rewatch and I can never find the version I remembered.

The cover is pretty foreboding too, now that I look at it again! But for some reason younger me was more alarmed by the part where the bow floats. Which doesn't make much sense - I mean literally it's just a picture of a bow floating in a tent - but there you have it.
