356 vivacious vampires

Oh vampires! Oh meme! It's October, which is officially Halloween season. And... Himaruya is back? Kind of? Sort of? In a way. I wonder if we'll ever find out what happened on Halloween. Or if it will forever remain... a mystery. Much like the decision making process behind most of these titles.

Enjoy part 356!

today's theme: creepy books

Movies can be terrifying, but there's something about a creepy book that can crawl under your skin and never leave! (although, unlike a real-life parasite, a creepy book will probably not come out of your nose when you least expect it.)

What are some creepy books you enjoy? Any reading level or genre!

Eh, the first time I skimmed over the storylines that weren't interesting to me so I skipped around a lot, but with a book like that you can do whatever you want. Still gave me nightmares, fuckin' monsters and wallholes and shit.
So you're really not the only one. Really.

My mom read Peculiar Children this past year, but she didn't seem to think it was a 'creepy' book, she just really liked it. I should probably grab it from her, or from the library, wherever she got it. :Oc

I don't think it's creepy as much as it is a bit... unsettling?

The weird part is she didn't report on that at all. She really thinks weird supernatural stuff can happen and it doesn't have to be creepy, like at one point she thought I might be a prophet. Not unusual for parents to be slightly delusional about their kids, but she believes in a very wide-open set of things.
I'll be interested to see what anon thinks is unsettling and my mom thinks is neato.

a TERRIBLE book that wanted to be creepy but in reality just fucking sucked

Ahhhh, books! I don't usually like creepy, so a search of my bookshelves only came up with two candidates, neither of which I've yet read (but I intend to, and maybe now's the perfect season).

The Painted Bird, which has a pretty freaky cover (i.e. burning houses, emaciated horses, a man who's been hanged, ravens, graves, and a girl who's having sex? with a skeleton bird) It's about a little boy who gets separated from his parents at the start of WWII and just wanders from village to village. Apparently many horrors occur, which is not surprising.

<The Poison That Fell From The Sky</i> says on the cover "The true story of a modern horror: The day the world ended for one suburban town". During the 70s, a chemical plant in Italy accidentally leaked dioxin onto the whole town. Dioxin is an incredible poison. Animals died right away, but since people are bigger, it took longer. Horrifying mostly because it really happened, and could happen again.

When I was on a Neil Gaiman kick, I picked up The Graveyard Book and loved it. It definitely seemed 'easier' than Coraline, and IMO, less creepy despite taking place in an actual graveyard with ghosts featuring prominently throughout, but I still loved it.
But now I'm realizing I don't remember how it ended so I'm considering re-reading it. I have no shame, heck yeah self-indulgent re-reading kids' books.
And someone turned it into a graphic novel, look at that.

There's an horror book that looks like an IKEA catalog called "Horrorstör" by Grady Hendrix. I don't own the book, but the premise of a haunted IKEA-like place is quite amusing.

That sounds like it might be good for business, if the ghosts were accommodating or at least polite. Imagine how sweet it would be to see the furniture in action everywhere, like look, this is what your house could look like.
And hopefully not actually BE like because the ghosts would stay in the store and not follow you home.

Buhyoo! That would actually be more cute than horrifying, though. lol But I do like the idea of haunted furniture.
