part 358 movies turning 10 years old this year

We're old. We're so old. Just like Japan. And Nero. (Well, in spirit.)

How was your Christmas season, meme? Did you do anything fun? Do you have any plans for the New Year or any New Year's resolutions that you'll totally, totally keep?

Enjoy part 358!

Munnn

What kind of historical stuff would you most want to see in a strip? And what kind of character interaction? (both for denmark obvs)

Roleplay-related: What kind of things do you most enjoy playing? Have you considered doing offmeme plots?

Anooooonnn,

Weeeellllll, not gonna lie, the stuff I'd love to see most has already shown up a bit (March Across the Belts, showing a typical Denmark-Sweden fight and the dynamic Denmark and Norway had during their union; also, their economic troubles), but aside from that, I'd love to see Denmark with Iceland and his other Islands, and pretty much every instance when Sweden, Norway, and Iceland were like "screw this, I'm outta here". Big low points in his international relations, etc. Ooh! And the mass Dutch immigration in (I think) the 17th century! Hopefully with Denmark being WAY too friendly a host and Netherlands being so in over his head. And maybe how he gets on with France, 'cuz I think that would be pretty funny. The consummate city sophisticate and the country boy.

Hmmm...what I like most...I think I most like things that take me out of my characterization comfort zone and make me address sides of his character I haven't figured out yet. Which...is pretty vague, I guess, it's a know-it-when-I-see-it kind of thread. I also like silly banter threads, threads that make me laugh, and fight threads! As for offmeme plots- do you mean like threads in his journal/DR threads? I've done a few, but they don't seem to have come up much! The most recent one that comes to mind is one where he and Belgium went hunting.

Denmark with Iceland!!! I want to see that too, there isn't nearly enough interaction with them, which is odd considering the relationships between them. Also totally agreed on low points for him, HEH.
France France France /o/ Definitely agreed on that, both because those two interacting would probably be hilarious, and also because France talking to different people is always good.

"things that take me out of my characterization comfort zone and make me address sides of his character I haven't figured out yet" Vague, but I think I know what you mean; I've experienced the same thing, and it's GREAT. ... Also major +1 to fight threads. They happen so often but yessss

Also yeah, by offmeme plots I mean off-journal/DR stuff. Either relevant to meme events, or completely different storylines that are unrelated to meme plots. Do you remember how a couple times there were threads that were like "pick from a list of situations, post what you're willing to play, and if someone replies to you, go play it out"? I like those as a way to start, but it doesn't come up much and I'm not sure how often people have actually ended up doing it (though I've done it twice or so and the result was great so hey) Part of the reason I enjoy that kind of thing is that it potentially offers more opportunity to play stuff outside the comfort zone or even just outside the usual than the meme would offer.

Oops. Well, hi. :D

I stand corrected! Make that "Yuuuuuu".

Yeah! And I think the manga even recently touched on the fact that Denmark did "raise" him unaided for a solid century or so. Even if they're not biologically brothers, it'd be neat to see their brotherly interactions! And with France, I imagine it would go down a little like Denmark trying to get all up in his cultural grill and France being like "oh, honey. before you are saying you are cultured, let me explain you a thing".

I do remember seeing those! Not sure why I didn't fill one out. Might have missed the thread, or gotten lazy or forgot, or who knows. :|a

Oh, you. :D

Eh, did it say that about them? I don't remember that! Was it in one of the profiles? Ach, I'm pretty solid on all of Norway's nitpicky things but with the rest of the 5 I'm often like "Okay what was said and where can I find it" orz

Oh crap, the more you talk Denmark and France, the more I want it. D: That France, what a guy!
Speaking of Denmark + other nations, do you have any thoughts on him and Russia? In historical contexts mainly, or also in general....

Anyway re: those type of threads, mostly I just find them useful for certain kinds of plots... after all, Battle Royale type stuff only comes by once per year, for example (or not at all, in the recent case)

I don't remember...I could have sworn I read it somewhere, though. :|a

Hmmm. Russia, Russia....they were allies in the Great Northern Wars, and I think even Denmark would have had a rough time getting a handle on his character. Something about Russia's immovable-mountain tactics and hard-to-read personality just throw him, but I don't think it stopped Denmark from at least trying to pal around with him when they were allies. I imagine Russia found him pretty weird, too, being all upfront and open and emotionally incontinent as he is.

I'm sure they are! Did you have something in mind?

Curiouser and curiouser... I'll have to take a look when I next have time. Definitely sounds like a profile/blog notes kind of thing, but we'll have to see. orz I've often wished that somebody would put together a simple-and-clean index of where all the strips/notes/etc for these characters are, but it sounds like the kind of thing I would have to do myself.

Hmm... You make some good points there. I've become curious about their allied relationship, but it's something I'm going to have to think about more. I do agree that Denmark would at least try to be buds, though. And... Russia probably would find him weird, but how he would react to that weirdness, I'm not sure. (Perhaps curiosity could turn into something more.) I wish we had more to go off in canon with these two; the only thing that I actually remember is that one Halloween strip, where Denmark seemed to have a friendly attitude toward Russia (but... he acts that way toward almost everybody, so).

Unrelated: Could you tell me some stuff about Denmark and Færoes? Specifically what I've been thinking about lately is what differences there might be between Denmark's relationship with Iceland, and Denmark's relationship with Færoes. It seems like there would be a lot of similarities between those two relationships, and unfortunately I can't get any handle on how his relationship with her (let's say it's a her) would be different.

Re: roleplay... At this particular time, I don't have any specific ideas. Unfortunately. It's basically me putting out feelers to get an impression of the potential for interest if I did get an idea. "Open to it? y/n" basically.

[EDIT] Actually, I take the "no ideas" thing back; I just remembered an idea I had thought about but hadn't pitched to anyone because it was a matter of having trouble finding the right partner. How do you feel about zombies, and have you seen the film Dead Snow? Because I've been interested in that scenario - snowed in somewhere in middle-of-nowhere-Norway, accidentally reawakening some (Nazi) zombies, and having to get the fuck out of danger and deal with what's going on. It sounds like it could be a good scenario for violence and buckets of baggage, which is pretty fun for me.
BUT if that one doesn't grab you, I can put it aside for someone else, and give some thought to a different scenario.

Oh! And for some more Russia stuff, since you brought up the Halloween thing: he probably respects how well he's been able to hold his own in the past, and at least likes the idea that Russia's a family guy. How that plays out in practice...ehhhh, probably throws him again.

As for the Faeroes...yeah, I like to hope Greenland and the Faeroes are girls because (1) Denmark with "daughters" = adorable, and (2) Iceland as being the only boy amongst the Danish Constituents = hilarious. Let's see...it seems there's a lot of similarities between the conditions in Iceland and in the Faeroes. The transition to home rule and cultural autonomy seems to have gone a little smoother in the Faeroes than in Iceland (though, this is just a cursory look I've taken, so), so I think she probably feels much less self-consciousness about her political status and relationship to Denmark. Of the three, I suspect she's been indulged the most (and if she isn't the youngest Danish Constituent, she certainly acts like it). So whereas Iceland is self-conscious a great deal because he's had to push to be treated like an adult and has been babied by the main 5 and teased by 2 sisters...Faeroes seems to have gone through the younger-sibling experience of getting to do all the stuff the older one never got away with. To her, getting all that responsibility is only natural! So, again, sweet girl, but it's pretty obvious she's been given more leeway than the other two. (Well. Greenland got a lot of leeway, too, but only because she's so different from everyone else. Lot of indigenous culture going on, more clear-cut cultural identity, etc. Very self-possessed elder sister.) So whereas Iceland might be petulant and defensive with Denmark, I think Faeroes would be a little more relaxed about accepting Dan's gushing sibling affection. (With only minimal eyerolling.)

I know of the movie, though I haven't seen it. I'm not so sure at the moment! Mind if I think it over a bit?

Aw! To me, Denmark just seems to have the kind of personality where he'd seriously dote on his girls. In a, uh. Special, colonial kind of way.

Yeah, Iceland just can't catch a break! I think if he weren't so cripplingly self-conscious, he'd be amazingly well adjusted about interacting with girls.

AHH you've given me a lot to think about here... Hadn't considered the smoother transition resulting in possibly being less self-conscious, but now that you mention it, I can see it. And also the "indulged the most". BUHYOO, doting big bro Denmark, do want. (With eye-rolling of course)

And this also gives me a new frame to view Iceland's relations to Faeroes... yes yes lots to think about. *_*

Anyway - Sure, no problem! Take as much time as you want. (And of course if you ever get hit with an idea that would be interesting to play with our characters, I'd love to hear it!)
