Yes, I tend to agree - it's a completely different thing, and while I'm not going to berate people for liking it (different strokes etc.) I wish people didn't assume it was what canon Hetalia is like.
I wouldn't have minded the voices and even the accents (I...actually find Romano's kind of cute, in this 'oh so this is how we sound like to Americans, lol' way) and a bit of localization for the more obscure/weird jokes might have worked, but they went with a rewrite that also completely changed the tone for me from cutesy/whimsical/nonsense to "edgy" humor that doesn't really strike a note for me.
(It's not even that I don't like edgy humor in general, I do love black humor - but I tend to have high requirements for it. And now I sort of want to go in an off topic rant about different kinds of humor and perspective and translate what this Italian comedian said about it but I think I'll pass)
