when people drag fandom into situations there should not be fandom.

I don't mean being with friends, you see something that reminds you of shit, and you giggle with your friend about it.

I mean being at a dinner table with people who aren't fandom and making fandom the primary subject much to the other people's chagrin. It's the most awkward thing on earth.

also, beating a dead horse, but people who piss on other people's cosplays. Especially online or IN THE PERSON'S FACE OR TWO FEET FROM THEM AS IF THEY CAN'T HEAR YOU OH MY JESUS. You're dressing up as a fictional cartoon, get over yourself.

Wearing gaudy ass fandom shirts/hats/etc when in a fine dining place and/or at a super fancy ass art museum, etc. Idk, maybe I'm a picky dick, but if you're going somewhere with people and it happens to be a place where pretty much everyone else is at least wearing business casual, PLEASe DO THE dSAME I've seen horrific things at con mostly in regards to this sob.

Yeah, that's the thing that bothers me the most - I'm almost invariably in it for the characters, when it comes to fandom, so when so many works flatten them to this one trait it gets very frustrating.

And yes it's REALLY hard to find. Mostly because like anon said downstairs they're also terrible at subtlety and this is one of those things that requires some.

Yeah, it's like, I'd much rather read about a rivalry between two characters that runs in a different manner than just "HATE YOU I HATE YOU MORE THAN ANYTHING IN THIS DAMN WORLDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD" etc etc. Like for instance, having a moment between characters that are usually aloof or rude toward each other because of old grudges where they actually maybe think for a few that "haha, maybe you're not too bad" even if it's not for long. Or reading about a couple who is seen as "perfect" having an argument and having to own up to things and admit their mistakes in order to make things work??? I DUNNO, MAN.

Yeah. It bothers me. It's either always true love being showed in everybody's face or meh. Friendships don't exist, subtle displays of affection don't exist, etc.

It's especially annoying when the canon gets it right and manages some cute stuff. Like, Hetalia has all these cute friendships that you can read as shippy or just as dorks being dorks, but the fandom invariably writes them off as being so obnoxiously in love - no friendly arguing, no subtle signs of affection, all those things that make the dynamic unique disappear.

And SNK has characters dealing with pain and loss in a realistic and intelligent way, but the fandom is all booo so sad what if sad thing what if EVEN SADDER THING BOOHOOOO.

And this is a constant in all fandoms and it's so frustrating.

Oooh those are a huge soft spot of mine - fics in which enemies have to work together, for example. Even in shows when there's an arch-enemy everybody hates there's always one ep in which the enemy and the hero have to work together and it's invariably one of my faves especially because of that. Begrudging respect for the enemy is a concept I love.

And I also love fics in which my OTP argues when they're well-handled. Or in which they bicker all the time but in a way that shows how familiar they are with each other and how they're not afraid of arguing because they're so in love and they want to make things work and augh.

I mostly ship friendhips in a lots of the canons I follow precisely because I found them much more interesting and endearing than crush-based relationships. Even if the friends end up as something more. It's sad seeing fandoms forget about all the subtle and ambiguous cues.
