and of mind. Do do do do do do do do do do do.

How was your end-of-December-into-January time, meme? Did you make any New Year's resolutions? Or light a candle in your window in the hopes that Himaruya would update again instead of leaving us behind like an 19th century light house keeper's wife whose husband has gone off to sea? ... Did you?

Enjoy part 347!

People are currently talking mostly about orca captivity because of Blackfish, because that was what the film was specifically about. On top of this, part of the reason that captivity is so detrimental to whales and dolphins is their intelligence.

I'm sure some people don't think about other marine life in captivity, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't care if someone were to show them the detrimental effects captivity has on certain animals. Just like I know people who didn't give Sea World another thought until they saw the documentary and decided to do more research and realized that something they were brought up to think was normal/fun was pretty disturbing.

On the blogs I follow re: animal welfare and marine life, people talk about (including but not limited to): sharks, seals, penguins, dolphins, whales, walruses, 'regular' fish, mantas, etc, including the downsides of captivity for many of these species.

how is this even wank. also links to these previous seaworld wanks?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-21 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I confess, I have mixed feelings about this whole debacle.

Because on the one hand, SeaWorld clearly has an incredibly lousy track record of keeping their animals happy and healthy (and the world in general has been crappy about taking care of orcas in captivity; there's been almost no attempt that I can see to mimic normal family structures).

But on the other hand, there are quite a few actual species that wouldn't exist today if not for zoos, and there are some really good zoos that make a huge effort to make the enclosures mimic the natural habitat as closely as possible.

I guess I really feel that more zoos should be calling SeaWorld out on this...

The only wank I can think of was someone saying FUCKING SJWS to someone who said they had emailed Macy's re: that Sea-world float and were loling because of the standard reply they got back about family entertainment.

Finally!

I think it's important to make the distinction between animals that can have fulfilling, even happy lives in captivity and those that cannot.

Clearly, at this point, with 125 or so dead captive whales (out of about 160 either taken captive or born in captivity since the 1960s--and about 75% of them dying before they were 20 years old, when in the wild orcas typically live 30-50 for males and all the way up to 80-90 for females) and countless evidence of the harmful physical and psychological effects this is having on the animals, it is obvious that orcas cannot and should not be living in captivity. Oh and I'm not saying that you are saying they should be, just went on a tangent!)

Some zoos do wonderful work. And others.... well. And... still others are mixed bags. Like the Detroit Zoo, which has some wonderful enclosures--aaaand then they throw in huge bears in a tiny area of grass with some stone and call it a day.

I'm not surprised zoos aren't calling them out, just like I'm not surprised the documentary didn't get nominated. It can be very risky to openly criticize a huge, billion dollar corporation.

okay somewhat related. Did INdia really grant dolphins protection as "non-human persons" or is this a Tumblr lie

What things have you seen characters do in a fic just for the sake of drama even though it was totally illogical and ridiculous to the point that any normal people wouldn't do it?

I used to see a lot of this when I was in the Kingdom Hearts fandom, but a lot of ridiculous, over the top inclusion of mental disorders or similar problems, like bulimia, self injury, kleptomania, uhh that word for "likes to burn things down," etc.

okay wait I just read the actual content of your post, mine is more "stupid fic behavior" and not "normal people wouldn't do it"

(Anonymous) 2014-01-21 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
tumblr exaggerates slightly, but - cza.nic.in/ban%20on%20dolphanariums.pdf page 2 is the relevant one
Costa Rica, Chile and Hungary also ban capturing & keeping dolphins for entertainment shows.

Any misunderstanding that could be solved by the characters just talking honestly to each other instead of assuming the worst for chapters upon chapters and talking in vague riddles around each other.

I read this Hetalia fic in which characters A and B are a couple and discover that B infertile. The next morning, A is gone without a message and won't answer to B's attempts to contact him. This goes on for days and days, and B is convinced that he has dumped her because they can't have children. Much angst is had. But then he comes back and tells her that he just had to go and have himself sterilized so that she wouldn't have to feel bad about herself.
