part 347 dimensions of sight and sound

and of mind. Do do do do do do do do do do do.

How was your end-of-December-into-January time, meme? Did you make any New Year's resolutions? Or light a candle in your window in the hopes that Himaruya would update again instead of leaving us behind like an 19th century light house keeper's wife whose husband has gone off to sea? ... Did you?

Enjoy part 347!

He'd sent the letter ahead. Hard to tell if it'd get there. It was a long way, and sometimes things got lost on the journey. Mail. Packages. Cargo. Ships.

Netherlands let the smoke go, looked up at the sky, listened to the shifting of the sea and the creaking of the rigging, and took a draw on his pipe. Clear night. Nice. He tried to remember what he'd put in the letter to Japan. Poetry - one he'd read and liked, and one of his own. Details of what had been going on with himself. News from Europe. Sketches - the canals, the garden outside his home, birds that he'd seen sitting along the bridge he passed over every day.

He'd slipped some seeds into it, wrapped carefully in a paper packet. Sturdy plants with delicate blue flowers. Japan would like them. Maybe. If he could get them going, and he was sure he could, if he followed the notes he'd put with them. Which he would.

If the letter didn't get lost on the way. That was the thing. Never could tell.

It was a damn long journey.

you may sacrifice anything

but, to shake it up a bit, for this thread you are encouraged to get creative and make the sacrifice yourself.

a poem? a short story of devotion? a stick figure masterpiece mspainting showing people being thrown into the sun? a photo of a paperclip you have masterfully bent into the shape of a hot person and/or power?

writing prompt thread thing?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-22 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
I have this book called "A Writer's Book of Matches" which has 1,001 different writing prompts (most aren't good for fanfic, except the dialogue prompts) and a series of tables in the appendix that let you roll the dice and randomize for a series of factors about the writing, like the genre, age of protagonist, time period, etc.

Would anyone be interested in doing a writing prompt thread where I give the prompt, with the option of rolling the dice, for anyone who wants to participate? We could give a few days timeline to write something, then post results on the meme?

Meme, I'm going to have to repeat this year if I don't get this research paper done by Thursday. Please motivate me to finish it and finish it well! It has to be 2,100 words and it's about how Shakespeare's historical plays (I chose the second tetralogy, Richard II-Henry V) were biased in order to please the monarchy and royalists...

I know this sounds super easy to most of you but I'm a mediocre high school student.

/puts hand in air and waves it around vigorously

I'd be interested! A few days' work would be perfect for me. Just enough to get something decent but not so much I'll obsess over it.

What kind of research have you done already? Have you got a series of talking points you'd like to put in the essay?

Maybe both? But more the latter.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-22 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
I've already got enough sources to do it, I don't think it'll fit the plan I got though

(Anonymous) 2014-01-22 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
Well. You could compare and contrast Shakespeare's work regarding royal characters and argue that it was catering/sucking up to royalty by contrasting it with the work of another contemporary author who did not share his views? But, ah, that seems like a lot of research to do for 2 days.

YOU ANON I CHOOSE YOU.

Maybe I'll post one tomorrow or the day after! How many days do you think is fair? 3 days? more?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-22 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
Pretend it's due tomorrow.

Sit down and start working as though you are in all-out panic mode. I'm not sure how much research you've already done or if you are starting from a blank slate, but either way give yourself time limits. For example if you've only got eight hours to work with, research in 2 hrs or less, spend 5 hrs writing at least 500 words per hr (researching in between as needed), then last 1 hr proofreading and/or slipping in extra bs padding to up your wordcount.

Then tomorrow, revise revise revise. But you've already got something down, so at the very least you won't be empty-handed and panicking tomorrow night.

If it's at all possible to fake sickness tomorrow and skip school, do so. Pretend you have incredibly painful headache, stomachache, or period cramps if you have to - way easier to fake than a temperature.

DO NOT SPEND ANY MORE TIME HERE, GO GO GO GO GO. The absolute key thing is to start!
