part 347 dimensions of sight and sound

and of mind. Do do do do do do do do do do do.

How was your end-of-December-into-January time, meme? Did you make any New Year's resolutions? Or light a candle in your window in the hopes that Himaruya would update again instead of leaving us behind like an 19th century light house keeper's wife whose husband has gone off to sea? ... Did you?

Enjoy part 347!

I'm thinking about applying to grad schools in linguistics. I'm not majoring in it, but there is no actual way in hell that I am getting into a grad school for my actual major (SLP), and I'm not even sure that I want to.

But, should I email or call the schools I'm interested in to explain this, to see if I even have a chance? Because, you know, I dont really want to pay for the applications and go through the trouble of finding recommendations if I have no chance. Would it also be a good idea to ask my professors? Like the ones who's recommendations I'd want.

Im not sure if im in any hurry, though, I dont even know when I'm going to graduate. May? August? December? And most schools only have fall applicants, soo

(Normally I'd go to my mom with this, but she doesn't know this stuff, and she's always overestimating me ANYWAY, so. Im sorryfor continuously bugging you all holy shit)

Yeah. The joke is, it's the end of the Halloween and Christmas events

I'm from a 2500-3000 area and tbh, too many days of rain at once make me depressed.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-10 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably not, it may get planned but I don't think it'll actually happen. Wasnt a Christmas event planned? I think we'll be lucky if he finishes the Halloween event. This poor man keeps swamping himself in work!

Sounds fine to me? People go to grad school for things they didn't get an undergraduate degree in all the time. The key will be in articulating what you want to do or what's driving you in the essays and getting good recommendations from people who will basically back that up - maybe work on the essays or reasons why you want to do linguistics and discuss them with those you want to ask for recommendations?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-10 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
/sa

Also I'd say discussing chances with the professors you wanna ask write for you would be a good idea because 1) they can advise you 2) it will look good & they can like gauge your passion, get to know you that much better to write a better letter

Most linguistics grad school programs (in the US at least) take people from other fields, it's actually way more common still than taking people who did linguistics as undergrads as it's still an unknown field in many places. You'll likely have to take some supplementary courses in the beginning in linguistics, but again, so will a lot of your peers. If it's something you're really worried about you can email the departments and ask how they handle non-linguistics grads, but I really think you'll be fine, especially if your undergrad degree is in SLP.

Of course it's always a good idea to talk to professors who might be more in the know, especially ones you're going to ask for recommendations later because they'll remember you as showing an active interest in it, but really with SLP you're probably better off than someone who does anthropology or history or even a hard science then comes into linguistics.

Do you know where you're looking to apply to? Or which field you wanna go into?

I actually wish it would rain more. Most of the time, it's just overcast and gloomy and feels kind of... I don't know, half-assed? I used to live in a town where it rained a lot and usually quite heavily, and it was nice!

I feel strongest about him with Denmark, Sweden or Iceland; I also really like him with Netherlands, Germany, and England. Though I'm willing to throw him together with almost anyone.

Lately my interests have just been Denmark/Norway and Norway/Germany. And Norway/Netherlands unfortunately.

... Or do you mean specific meme roleplayers? Because he's really been only getting up to stuff with kingkongeriget lately. :Va

That's all true, yeah, but I'm not sure if the professors I want write letters for kids who aren't going on to SLP? ( though it also seems like most SLP kids continue on in the field)

I'm not really sure! I mean, like I've been looking at Boston University, and NYU, but mostly because they're in the northeast. NYU says they only have doctoral programs for ling, but I dont even know if I can handle MA, so! And idk if I want to go to like a 'big prestiguos/famous' school, but it also seems like those are the only ones with these programs and im nervous--!

Also, im not really sure what I want to do in it, heh. I mean, the perception and categorization of speech is cool, if really sciency, but so is how culture and language go together! And I. Hah. I have no idea what I'm doing.

femPrussia/Any Austria
femPrussia/Any Brandenburg (shhhh my stupid history crack ship)
femPrussia/femFrance/femSpain
femPrussia/femSpain
femPrussia/femAustria/Mangary
femPrussia/femItaly
femPrussia/femRomano
femPrussia/male Romania
femPrussia/femJapan

And that's roughly the order I ship them in too. Generally always interested in the top two, have been bouncing Nyotalia Frying Pangle around in my head recently too but ehhh.

If you mean specific memers, then all of her interactions with whorestria and fraustria = ♥, I really enjoyed the shower sex with oh_espana and fruited_plain, and when they're not bickering babies ship tease with dererste is the best.

It's funny because I know a lot of ling undergrads who go on to SLP for grad school because we're told that's where all the money is, so it doesn't surprise me that a lot kids stay on with it. But linguistics is a related field, I can't imagine it will be an issue but you'll never know until you ask.

Unfortunately, more than undergrad, at the graduate level most people care about the name of your school more than your performance. Linguistics is especially kind of circle jerky like that, since it's more modern than most social sciences. If you're looking at the northeast I'll plug my alma mater and tell you to look at University of Massachusetts Amherst- it's a big state school so it doesn't have the elite feel to it, but is actually the 4th best linguistics school in the US and 8th in the world. There are several good professors there for neurolinguistics and psycholinguistics if you want to stay related to SLP still.

But lots of people change their specialty in graduate school so don't worry too much! Sounds like you might want to look at sociolinguistics programs? Perhaps schools that have both that and psycho/neuroling if you want an opportunity to explore both?
