I know, and it's probably one of the things that keeps this ship from being my OTP, and I don't want to handwave it by saying "Oh, it started as hatesex but then it turns out there was other stuff". I don't read a whole lot of fic for this, either, since not much suits my tastes and I'm also lazy, so I haven't absorbed many ideas from other RusAme shippers. Hm. Maybe they found a way to connect using their sentimentalism for the past. They would have to start respecting each other just a little. Then they could move away from a sucker-punch kind of relationship to an arm-wrestle kind of relationship. Just a little more structure and regulation. That is what I want.
So if you were to compare it to something, FrUK would be louder and more animated in their fights than RusAme, but France and England have also been growing up next to each other for centuries and centuries and they already do have a relationship that goes beyond competitive animosity. So it's not exactly like that, but it would be in the same neighborhood? The same city?
