What happened is that the young fans came in. The problem with anime is that anime always attracts 12, 13, 14 year olds who feel too strongly about everything like any teenager. They're the ones that start all of that and then they fire up the whole fandom. Usually, eventually, the older ones in the fandom realize how ridiculous they're being and stop but that hasn't happened in Free! fandom yet.
