part 353 whalers on the moon

We've been here over a year now! I can hardly believe it! Dreamwidth's been pretty good, I'd say, with almost no downtime to speak of and all that! Anyway... how is your spring going? Or I guess it's almost summer, isn't it? Hopefully it's been well! I've been catching up on work and new movies, all very exciting stuff, I'm sure.

Enjoy part 353!

A truckload of body and dysphoria warnings for a pic of a shirtless guy

I would like to see that pic of a shirtless guy.

For science.

Sometimes I wonder how the fuck these people function in real life. Life doesn't have trigger warnings.

Eh. It was just Poland.

has anyone ever taken any free online courses? do you have any interesting ones to share?

Part of the general idea of fasting during Ramadan is to practice self-control, to resist temptation, to practice self-discipline, etc.

I mean, obviously, someone observing the fast probably wouldn't go looking in food porn tags. That is practicing self-discipline. But for others to change their habits in order for you to resist temptation - that feels contradictory.

As far as I'm aware, part of the significance of the fasting during Ramadan is about self restraint, self discipline, self control.

So it is rather ironic that one who wishes to practice self control would, rather than stopping themselves from temptation, ask other people to change their behaviors so as not to inadvertently tempt them. It's on the believer to exhibit the self control and resist or avoid temptation, it's not on the people around them.

Whoops, a minute late. But yeah, as above anon said.

/same anon you replied to /also to above anon

Oh, I wasn't clear enough. I've never actually seen anyone who observes Ramadan ask food to be tagged--it's always been other people (who don't observe) giving "friendly reminders" for others to tag in case they have Muslim followers or in case people are browsing the /tagged part of the site.

I might take this one, but I've heard some hmmmm thinks about coursera courses that make me wonder if I should spend my time doing them. though the hmmmmm thing I heard was from 2 years ago...

/above-above anon

Oh, I see. Yes, I've seen that too.

It seems well-intentioned, but realllly not necessary, because of the above points. If someone isn't already tagging their stuff for categorization purposes, then, again - it's changing the habits for someone else, which is kind of against the point for the observer.

not a trigger warning but I just saw an RP blog tell someone else that a post of theirs was "not for YOU to reblog, it's for RPers ONLY" because the person who reblogged it was just reblogging the post for a quote, not to RP.

grrrrrrrrlllllllll

woah anon i am so tempted to take it too it looks so interesting!

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
That's been a thing in the Tumblr RP community for a while now. I hate it because said RP blog sounds so up their asses. I understand if you don't want people reblogging your threads but if it's over a quote, picture, or even a character image/faceclaim... you need to chill.

There was a review which specifically mentioned a Holocaust course, which was described as being taught by renowned professors in the field. As it turned out, the videos used in the course had been created years before--it was not new material--and they got intern TAs to create the questions and exams and other course material and participate on the forum for the course. The actual professors had nothing to do with the course at all. They didn't advise on what material to use or create new material or have any hand in the course other than having lectures taped years ago.

Also, since it's a peer graded system, it's really difficult to get a gauge on how well you're doing unless they do multiple choice exams/tests. The person who is grading your paper could be a high school student or someone with a degree in the subject, you nver know. Which, while certainly something that can be used in a course, aren't always the best for figuring out how much you really understand material.

And I mean, it's not to say "oh blah old lectures! those can't be helpful" but if it is the case that the 'free online course' is compiled of old materials and the professors aren't involved... be honest! Say "With material by _____" instead of "instructed by ____"

I took free online courses in medical assisting when I thought I might want to do that

Kind of off-topic, but on-topic if someone did actually tag for this:

For me, pictures of the deep sea, the open sea, large whales in the open sea (especially Sperm whales), or things on the seafloor, are terrifying. If I never had to see another picture of the Titanic on the seafloor, I would probably live longer. I hate that jolt and freezing up and the panicked navigating away so that I don't I get locked in and feel like I'm dying. Even better, I have to pretend like I'm fine because my sisters used to chase me around the house with pictures like this in order to scare me.

But who's going to fucking tag for open sea pictures. I'm just lucky they're fairly rare.

Right

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
That sucks, anon. It's a pain in the ass when you get freaked out by something that people don't usually use categorization tags for.

/isn't freaked out by the ocean, but is bothered by some things that aren't usually tagged/warned for

What if someone wrote Hetalia fanfiction and turned it into a bestselling novel that got movie rights?
