part 353 whalers on the moon

We've been here over a year now! I can hardly believe it! Dreamwidth's been pretty good, I'd say, with almost no downtime to speak of and all that! Anyway... how is your spring going? Or I guess it's almost summer, isn't it? Hopefully it's been well! I've been catching up on work and new movies, all very exciting stuff, I'm sure.

Enjoy part 353!

Notice how local, Chinese activists themselves think some of the dogs were stolen. They don't literally break into peoples houses, but they round up strays in the street and loose pets get caught up too. Go look at the pictures, not all of those dogs are farmed dogs.

No, it doesn't happen here. Even birds are required to have a 13X9 inch space at least. Again, it's abysmal, but it is not China-level.

Medical care is also required for any sick animals, don't know why you think it wouldn't be. And again, there is a difference between being allowed to keep animals in close confinement and hitting them because they're annoying you.

Wow, what a non argument. What part do you disagree with?

I admit I can't find a number on that, but APHIS has 600-800 personal responsible for investigating reports and doing inspection(http://www.aphis.usda.gov/publications/aphis_general/2012/IES_process.pdf), not to mention OSHA and EPA inspections and regulations, plus you have welfare organizations like HSUS, ASPCA, and of course PETA keeping an eye on things. So yes, workers are punished.

Sorry for more headcanon threads, and sorry if this has been done before BUT, what are your headcanons on where Nations live? Do they live in a house, in an apartment, in some cardboard box somewhere?

Are they tidy, messy, somewhere in between? What about pets?

What about the kiddie nations or the micro-nations?

Just living headcanons, I guess.

I headcanon that if he lived in an IKEA store, he would at least have a place in the back of the store where he had the basic things like a bed, stove, etc (since it was mentioned he lived pretty frugally).

I also think he has an actual house (mentioned in cleaning Prussia-san, me thinks), but how often he uses it is up for debate.

I like how you're calling Americans culturally insensitive, then turning around and going "Oh, unless they're dogs, of course! Cutie wootie doggies."

Fucking hypocrite.

Yep, in Prussia's cleaning game, the alley with the entrance to Sweden's house is shown. It's pretty clear that it's in Old Town (I've been on that actual street, I think...) Though I have no idea what it might look like inside, architecturally.

Doesn't look like much from the alley entrance, but I must say, Sweden has a pretty awesome location. Though finding parking must be a total pain in the ass.

Norway has two "houses". One is a rather small and nondescript apartment in Oslo. But his main residence is actually about 1/1.5 hours away from the capital, just outside a small village. It's a large, old house that he's had for quite a while. Not the same as the one we're shown in the comics - that house is probably long gone, considering the state it was in - but it might be in the same location, which wasn't specified.

Iceland's house is small, newish (at least in comparison to Norway's main home), and very light and cheery inside (lots of white, lots of natural lighting). He doesn't really have a lot of personal possessions, so the main areas are very neat and tidy. ... His bedroom, though, is another story.

The Italies have lots of houses, small villas in the countryside and apartments in ancient buildings in their favorite cities, usually nice, with elegant furniture and very well-kept, because a) they're both spoiled as hell b) they're remnants from times in which they were rich c) they're often used as guest houses when they invite people over, or offered to people who can't afford a house for a while. All of those houses have huge kitchens and lots of guestrooms. Romano has some small lonely houses scattered in remote places for when he just can't stand any of those assholes anymore. His favorite one is in the Vulcano island - living right over an active vulcan is therapeutic for him.

They often end up sharing the same place even if they could go live in two different places because neither of them likes the feeling of being home alone (unless, like I said, it's Romano having a moment, and then Veneziano takes the chance to invite Germany over). No house pets, they move around too often, but Veneziano is Disney princess levels of communion with nature and stops to play with literally every animal he meets including snakes, and Romano keeps donkeys and mules in his country houses (he says it's training for when he needs to talk with the family, but he honestly just really likes those animals, they have all the good qualities of reliability and patience he lacks). At least one of those is always invariably named Antonio.

Something similar for Spain, except his buen retiro is somewhere close to the border of the desert, and it's less of a matter of needing alone time and more of sudden bouts of paranoia. He thinks nobody knows where it is, but Romano found out by accident once. He doesn't plan on telling Spain, he's afraid he'll change it to somewhere even more remote where nobody could find him if something happened to him.

Spain hates being home alone, too, but sadly he doesn't have anybody willing to share his house with him anymore, which is why he likes to go visit other people a lot and invite people over a lot, too. He used to keep some exotic pets (parrots, monkeys) but he was too devastated when they died. Nowadays he has torro, of course, when he's in the country (and he's very conflicted about corrida), but mostly he leaves the animals be and just cuddles with them when he gets the chance (see: turtles).

Greece has a tiny simple apartment in Athens and tiny simple houses scattered along the mainland and the islands. They're all almost empty and with little comforts because he likes them that way, not because the comforts aren't available - he's been offered entire palaces, but he thinks luxury is more trouble than what is worth. He's very hospitable, but if you're his guest he's more likely to send you to a hotel at his expenses than invite you at his house because he knows not everybody can adapt to his very Spartan lifestyle. He's almost never at home anyway, he's more likely to fall asleep wherever he is, eat at cafès/restaurants and ask for temporary hospitality here and there. His people are used to him popping from nowhere and asking if he can take a shower or use their couch for a couple hours. Nobody minds. If he remembers, he finds a way to pay them back, but he never offers money upfront because he knows it would probably be refused.

He doesn't really mind being alone, he finds it peaceful. He has cats in the sense that he feeds them when he remembers and the cats are naturally attracted to the idea of cuddling with him, but honestly the cats don't belong to him, they're just occasional conversation/cuddling partners. He likes all animals, but he doesn't like the idea of owning a living thing and having complete responsability for it, ya feel me.

I like to think they all have multiple homes they cycle through. They have one that's near the seat of government or even a part of the palace complex if they have a royalty system, a smaller place in town where they can get away for a day, and also a few homesteads in the country where they can really get away from it all. One of the places in the country might even have been their original house way back before all this government and monarchy stuff really started to take hold, they've just been updating and renovating it now and again.

Having multiple homes means that they can connect with and live like many different kinds of people within their populations, so they don't get too out of touch.

Just a quick pass by to say you hit my Greece headcanon right on the money!

Yes, how dare we not find something disgusting when it involves animals that we are very attached to in our culture. We're not allowed to find eating dogs disturbing without it becoming a 'b-b-but, muh culture! Stupid Americans!" thing.

Let me tell you how human thinking works: not objectively. Something you culturally believe is morally wrong, you're not going to suddenly find right because it's normal in another culture. Why is it that only Americans get flak for this? I'm pretty sure we're not the only ones that do it because we're human beings and that's how we think.

So yes, I think eating dogs is unthinkable. I would be disgusted with anyone who ate one. Does that mean I'm not aware of our own meat industry problems? No. Does that mean I don't know that other animals have the same level of intelligence? No. However, I didn't grow up caring for a pig like a beloved pet.
