part 353 whalers on the moon

We've been here over a year now! I can hardly believe it! Dreamwidth's been pretty good, I'd say, with almost no downtime to speak of and all that! Anyway... how is your spring going? Or I guess it's almost summer, isn't it? Hopefully it's been well! I've been catching up on work and new movies, all very exciting stuff, I'm sure.

Enjoy part 353!

Yeah, I was raised in a pretty American environment even though I grew up in Brazil, I had a lot of books and movies and my parents spoke English to me frequently. But it wasn't until I actually moved to the USA that I realized just how different the culture actually is. Even now, I tend to have more in common with my European/Asian/Latin@ friends, than I do with born-and-raised-American friends.

I'll try and look for that article again, it was really fascinating!

+1 but apply this to Tumblr posts in general. That "Rejected Princesses" blog which is full of misinformation comes to mind.

I feel like this is backlash to Twilight or the Vampire Diaries. Or True Blood. "Hdu vampires and NOT HANDSOME SEXY PEOPLE" ... except the sexy vampire trope(s) have been here long before any of these series existed?

Yeah, I've learned not to take seriously anyone who tries to argue that this pairing or character is ~perfect~ and ~the best~ because of history. Like all those people who make long posts about how Prussia is so kick-ass and the strongest country in history but fail to mention any of the lost wars/battles, societal problems etc, or people who post that Prussia has the saddest and most tragic history in the world.

Yeah I remember one where the person was moaning the fact that when s/he introduces friends to each other, they get close and s/he gets insecure.

I hate how there are so many comics like that with loads of notes and I've never seen one comic showing the opposite.

The second link has "number of cities larger than their capital" is it really that weird to have another city larger than the country's capital?

that would make sense!

Even with Twilight, I mean, the issue with Twilight for me isn't "omg!! the vampires aren't gruesome and they sparkle and don't usually drink blood!" but "Bella Swann being emotionally abused and thinking her relationship is more important than her life." Who cares if someone takes vampires and spins them? they're not set in stone...

It's unusual for the largest city in a country to not be the capital, but I wouldn't say it's particularly weird.

Other examples include Canada (Toronto largest, Ottawa capital), Australia (Sydney largest, Canberra capital), China (Shanghai largest, Beijing capital), Brazil (Sao Paulo largest, Brasilia capital), and Nigeria (Lagos largest, Abuja capital). There are plenty more, although they're definitely a minority.

Europe is pretty much all largest-city-is-capital though, so maybe from a European perspective it's weird (European exceptions include Liechtenstein and Malta).
