part 353 whalers on the moon

We've been here over a year now! I can hardly believe it! Dreamwidth's been pretty good, I'd say, with almost no downtime to speak of and all that! Anyway... how is your spring going? Or I guess it's almost summer, isn't it? Hopefully it's been well! I've been catching up on work and new movies, all very exciting stuff, I'm sure.

Enjoy part 353!

That's my first time seeing it and while I do agree with almost everything there, the tone of that post was so condescending that it got my defences up.

I don't post any fanart myself (mine or anyone else's), but in my eyes it just isn't acceptable to post someone else's art without their permission*. I can't imagine any other reason for people to do it except to get attention and followers with minimal effort.

* though when the source has been deleted, then I don't mind. Japanese artists have this annoying habit of cleaning the table and deleting everything when they leave a fandom and in those cases I have no problem with others sharing the art so that those who entered the fandom late can also enjoy it.

You and fanart

How do you act with fanart drawn by others, particularly when it comes to saving a copy and sharing it? Do you have a lot saved?

"I can't imagine any other reason for people to do it except to get attention and followers with minimal effort."

Lmao I used to share fanart on tumblr all the time before I found out j-fen don't like it and I can't even imagine doing it for those reasons. The reasons I did was because I a) wanted an online backup of the images so I didn't have to save them all to my computer, b) to keep all the images on one blog and c) to share them with others because I like to share stuff and I never asked for permission because I didn't know the artists cared about that stuff, my social anxiety and the language barrier.

I see someone or several memers repeating that over and over but I can't even imagine sharing other people's fanart for attention or followers. If I wanted that I'd learn to draw or write or host fests or start discussions or w/e and post my own stuff. That thinking is so ridiculous it's like taping a marathon and sharing it with people to get attention for winning it.

I agree the tone could have been better, but that leads into your next point that some people do it for attention. Some do. That post does a condescending job of scolding them. Others do it because they like the art and want to catalog it, and those are the people who would be most offended by the tone of most of that, imo, because they're not worried about losing followers (yo shut up about losing followers and get over it), they're worried about losing art.

And yeah, that's why I don't mind sharing deleted art.

I don't think anyone posts other people's art with the idea that the attention they get is the same as what the artists would get. But it's still attention. It's a nice feeling when people like and reblog your posts, especially if you're the first to post some brand new piece of art to the tags. And there are lots of blogs that do nothing except post art from Pixiv and they gets tons of followers, so, yeah, I absolutely think people do it for attention.

I rarely reblog art. It has to be really good, something I want to share and exhibit, and almost always it's posted by the artist.

But I save art like mad. I'm a bit picky but if I like it, I save it, with credit.
I have 15,000 pieces of fanart saved for Hetalia. About half of those are cataloged. Many are deleted pieces and I want to re-share them
Then I have about 2-3,000 pieces of fanart for other fandoms. Some of those are cataloged by fandom, others are not.

Yeah but that's how you feel about it. Not everybody feels the same about all that like you do.

Or do you think the anons that used to post images to the meme also do it for attention because it feels nice when people comment on it or w/e? Cause I can tell you as someone that used to do it that's also not true lol.

I save nice pics if they portray pairings or characters I like, or if they're just so gorgeous that I can't pass them. But I'm really lazy, so even after years in this fandom, I only have maybe 500 pics.

I have no plans of sharing any of the art, so I don't write down credit or sources. The only exceptions are a couple of specific artists who have their own folders because I've systematically tried to save as much of their stuff as possible. For example, when Maturin announced their site was closing soon, I grabbed every image I could get my hands on.

Seconding the other anon again. Some bloggers do it for the attention, others don't. So open up your imagination and imagine people who don't do it for attention, like the two people you're talking to right now.

yes

(Anonymous) 2014-06-11 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends on who the follower is.

If it's someone that I talked to regularly and we hadn't had a fight or anything, I'd be confused/upset.

But if it's someone I never talk to, nah.

Yeah sometimes I kinda go like "aww :(" but that's all.

But other times I'm also glad because I know the person who unfollowed me only followed me to be polite and I feel like guilty for posting stuff I know they don't care about.

They did historical Germany and Prussia pics/doujins. It was a common theme in their books that half of it would take place when Germany was little, and the second half would be during WWI or WWII, can't remember. The two halves would then be connected through some theme, such as music or food or whatever. The art was really nice, but there was some mild shota, like kissing and blushing and petting, in the little Germany scenes sometimes that kind of got under my skin.

Here's a sample of their stuff on Toranoana: http://www.toranoana.jp/bl/article/04/0020/00/38/040020003882.html

In general, nah.

If it's someone I kind of knew, I'd be a little sad, but it doesn't necessarily mean we're suddenly on bad terms. And even if we were, nothing good comes from forcing people to be exposed to you. They unfollowed for a reason and I have to be content with what I have.

Ahh, I didn't bother to read the post but got the idea, and as a Japan rper, honestly it only feels right to ask all artists for their permission to repost their works now... and so many of them are so nice about it even when they give me rejections, and some even give me personal responses or compliment my blog despite that (I've even been called with "-sama"?! It's just really cute!) so - basically, it feels really nice when I can get permission from artists but it also doesn't matter to me as much as I thought it would if I get rejections! I just don't share works from artists who reject permission from then on.

I also try to delete already posted art on my blogs from artists who reject permission as much as I can, but I've probably missed quite a few posts due to different tags I used, ahh. I try to fix that by going back through my archives every so often, and I just save images to a private blog so I don't lose them, but I probably wouldn't share/reblog them myself anymore except by direct link (to pixiv/etc. source) or "liking" deleted art posted by others (particularly by also deleted artists/websites/etc.) on tumblr... ehh and yes

Basically, it seems like a grey area for a lot of people, but... yeah, personally, asking for permission is something I like to do now.

No. I never bother to look at my follower count, so I wouldn't even notice if someone left.

What do you generally talk about or share on your twitter or tumblr?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-11 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I mostly reblog so I rarely talk, but when I do it's usually dumb fandom jokes, surveys, or adding my two cents to someone failing at being a decent human being.
Twitter's pretty much the same, but much less in volume.
