part 353 whalers on the moon

We've been here over a year now! I can hardly believe it! Dreamwidth's been pretty good, I'd say, with almost no downtime to speak of and all that! Anyway... how is your spring going? Or I guess it's almost summer, isn't it? Hopefully it's been well! I've been catching up on work and new movies, all very exciting stuff, I'm sure.

Enjoy part 353!

[A very wet kiss that earns her a Look.]

Hmph. I can hardly go anywhere like this. I can just imagine the uproar if Deutschland were to see us. Not to mention the general public. I would utterly embarrassed. And are you certain there is nothing in here? I am sure I felt something graze my ankle-

Have there been things whose message or contents were so morally abhorrent to you that you couldn't get past it to enjoy even the good parts? Was it ever so bad you couldn't finish something?

I think prolonged exposure to tumblr has jaded me to use of the word "problematic" because so many things are claimed to be ~problematic~ by certain types of tumblr, so that my immediate reaction is to roll my eyes.

That said, I hate most cowboy shows, ESPECIALLY fucking "Ponderosa" because they're so racist and sexist and the condescending hypocritical morality of them pisses me off so much.

I can think of 2...

I managed to watch all of Fight Club and I grudgingly liked some parts of it but I HATED the alpha male bullshit and idea that men have been castrated by modern society(women) and the world would be be a better place if REAL MEN were in charge. It wasnt the directors intent but its there and I wouldnt watch the movie again because of it

Durarara had a bunch of things that I was able to look past from episode 2, but the final straw was when it turned out that *spoiler* Shinra knew where Celtys head was the whole time but didnt tell her. Dropped it after that

+1 to the first part

in my textbook today it was talking about how...using "america" to describe the usa (or something) was 'problematic' and i couldn't take it seriously. i just couldnt. i had to skim so i didnt keep rolling my eyes at the use of the word.

'I HATED the alpha male bullshit and idea that men have been castrated by modern society(women) and the world would be be a better place if REAL MEN were in charge'

Its very prevalent and normally I can ignore it but Fight Club was just so... pretentious about it I cant

Its like an edgy 16 year old telling his friends in an excited lecture about how awesome it would be if we went back to fighting all the time and men were in charge, only in movie form

idk if this counts??? but my friend is getting married at a plantation house and she's verrrrrry into Gone with the Wind and the concept of the Glory Days of the South and wants it to be like an ~*~classic Southern belle~*~ wedding and something about it just rubs me the wrong way.

yo, i think that counts

like i hope she's just extremely sheltered and having a serious fault of not Thinking Shit Through, but still. probably it rubs you wrong bc it is in fact a skeevy thing if you actually think about it in contex and stuff.

Fuck do I want vanilla ice cream

Re: That's problematic

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Idk if I'd call her sheltered but her family has always been into "Southern culture." She used to do Southern belle pageants, that sort of thing.

I don't think she's... really thought it through in the sense that she doesn't talk about the fact that the "Glory days" of the South were made on the backs of slave labor and that her wanting a "old Southern belle" wedding at a plantation is a reflection of that. It's just. Very. :|a

Not sure this counts but oh well

Once I read this really bad article about climate change. The person was apparently trying to sound really dramatic in order to convince people to believe in it because there were ridiculous "facts" like Greenland has been a giant ice block since the time of the dinosaurs and only now are people able to live on it because all the ice is melting so fast that the whole thing will be gone in a few years. As someone who's studied climate science, it was embarrassing to read. I ended up writing a massive reply essentially saying "Your article is fuel for climate change deniers to point at as an example for how stupid they think the people who believe in climate change are." And Iisted every wrong "fact" in the article and why they're wrong.

I knew that not everyone who's ignorant of climate science (or even science in general) (or even geography, since she didn't seem to realize that Greenland was above the Arctic Circle) is necessarily a climate denier, but I'd almost rather have someone so stupid be one.

I'd say that counts. I mean plantation homes are beautiful but having a southern Belle wedding there is creepy

2. How much longer are you planning to stay awake? (Or, are you on your way to sleep already?)
