The graph up there reminded me of this. The last time I was visiting with friends of friends, we were talking about problematic fandoms, how annoying they can get, how to deal with it, etc, and hitting it off pretty well in general. I mentioned I know that feeling of having to hide in a safe, sane corner of the fandom, because after all, I'm in the Hetalia fandom. It was quiet. After a while, she said something to the effect of "Yeah, I can see why you'd need to hide, especially when you see cosplayers doing that... you know... the salute at..." I told her no, that's not what I'm talking about, because we don't tolerate that shit, and we kicked their asses and we still kick anyone's asses if they try to do anything like that, no, that's not tolerated even among the annoying fans.
And yet this is still what we fucking look like to people. Maybe I don't know what's going on.
