Thoughts? (Since livestream chat is a butt today)

I was really really surprised at how emotionally invested I became?!?! I mean I love the original film, I really like the live action film, but this just took it up to a different emotional level than I was expecting.

Even though some of the changes weren't quite working (Idk how I feel about the change with Dmitri) they adapted things so well, combining elements from the live action film and animated film and history ahhhh....

I really hope this has a long life on Broadway, it's a genuinely beautiful show. I'm trying to save up to see it next year, I hope I can see it live but also my heart my break while watching it.

OH OH OH ALSO

How BEAUTIFUL was that song where they were about to leave Russia?!?! And the melody from In the Dark of the Night was used in a haunting and beautiful way in it, omg. That poor count.

what were the changes you didn't like? i must not have caught what you meant about dmitri.

also, i never saw the live action so i can't know what elements they incorporated from that. i'll have to watch that someday.

For me a few of the changes are just little things that didn't make sense. Like I didn't really get why Anya was so upset at Dmitri after the empress wouldn't see her in the show? Since he specifically said "Vlad and I will get a reward" when he was convincing her to join them, whereas in the animated film he hides the reward completely so that her feeling of being conned and betrayed makes sense. If they just axed the line about the reward it would make perfect sense.

oh I mean how in the animated film, Dmitri is a servant boy who saves Anastasia and her grandmother's life, and he realizes she's really Anastasia when Anya tells the story about the servant boy opening a wall.

But now in the musical, with Dmitri, his connection to Anastasia is now only about how they met at the parade "in a crowd of thousands." Which I'm so torn about because it was a really emotional scene and beautiful song and I teared up during it! Idk. I feel like it's something that I will probably like more once time goes on and I get used to it haha.

ahh, okay! see, since i was struggling with getting the stream to work at that point, i sort of missed how she joined up with him, so i wouldn't have marked the reaction being inconsistent with what he'd been upfront to her about. and i missed the beginning so i didn't see if they opened with a flashback scene like they did in the animation, with young dmitri eventually saving her. i was thinking if they had, then the talk of the parade was in addition to that, rather than it completely replacing dmitri's role in anastasia's past back then. their meeting again certainly is more poignant with the animation's backstory, so i understand.

i assumed the musical did start with a flashback of some sorts because i was still seeing stills while the loading circle was plaguing me; am i right in that? i thought i saw dancing and maybe the scene where the music box would've been given?

(totally still have one of those music boxes from when the movie came out, btw.)

Yes, it did start with a flashback! it started with the grandmother with young Anastasia in her bed, they talked about her going to Paris and what they'd do there. Then she gave her the music box and they sang. Then there was a big dance scene where then the tsar and empress came out and Anastasia started dancing with her father, which turned into the sisters, brother and courtiers coming out and more courtier dancer, then it skipped ahead to a different year as they were dancing (I think 1913 to 1917? I could be wrong) and suddenly the palace is being attacked, gunshots, broken glass, then it went to black and when it came back it was a spotlight on the grandmother reading a letter about the family being killed, then it went to There's a Rumor in St. Petersburg.
