this is my big beef with fandom culture and interpretation/criticism of media these days; nothing can be a matter of taste, everything becomes a stand for a moral/ethical/political issue and if you like A it makes you immediately at war with B.
also i am very over this "if it makes some man annoyed, it's a victory for feminism and if we're feminists we HAVE TO LOVE IT!" kind of attitude - again, especially in the fandom sphere, which i think carried over from gamergate initially. it's the fraternal twin of the anti-kink, anti-shipping bs; only instead of "if you dare like this you're problematic" in this case it's "if you dare dislike this you're problematic" when in most cases it really is just a matter of taste and not some kind of declaration on How All Women Should Be.
i'm hoping all this crap boils down to growing pains and eventually, one day, there'll be enough variety of female characters and minority characters in popular media that the perceived stakes will be lowered and we won't have to have a shitfit over the minutia of any one particular character's traits. fact is, it's impossible to have a she-ra or a thundercats or a star wars that is EVERYONE's preferred she-ra or thundercats or star wars, or to "validate" (god i'm starting to hate that word almost as much as "problematic") EVERY person with representation in one particular character. some little girls are going to relate to 2018 she-ra more than they would have with original she-ra. and for some other little girls, it'll be the other way around. it's ok.
heck, some fanboys are going to be more turned on by flat muscular 2018 she-ra than original busty she-ra and they are going to fap to her and that is ok too. not to mention everybody getting up in arms about this seems to forget fangirls are just as thirsty about attractive fictional male characters. and also that some lesbian/bi girls probably also fapped to original she-ra and are more attracted to those traditionally sexy feminine proportions.
the irritating bit is the particular guys who are like "no fanservice for my particular tastes = show is evil sjw garbage" but i don't see much of this attitude at all - just a lot of people immediately reading any negative opinion as being this.
