Part 11 comes after Part 10

Part 10 is over! Part 11 is here. If you haven't checked the challenge entry, the challenge has been extended until Part 11 maxes. Hopefully that is enough time for people who are busy with finals and such to find time to enter, if they'd like to!

Should I mention that the number 11 scares me? I really don't like that number. Like how Natalie Portman hated the number 5 (or 6?) in Where the Heart Is. But a higher number. Well, anyway.

what's so strange about it? USA is one of the strongest chess nations after all...

(Anonymous) 2009-05-20 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
That might be true, but it just doesn't go with his personality in Hetalia at all.

Why? I'm curious because you can be ultra naive and good at chess, I don't see why his personnality should be incompatible with this game.

You need to be of the patient type to play chess. I can't depict America sitting around for hours, waiting for his oppenent to make a move. I just can't. Sorry.

This is where America breaks out the Blackberry or the PSP between turns.

Haha, I know some serious chess players who would beat him up for that :D

It's ALFRED. He's going to want to do things his way. XD

I think anyone who plays with him would already be willing to put up with a lot of his behavior. He's probably playing Arthur.

you need to be interested in the game enough to focus on it... look at Hikaru (Hikaru no go, I know very lame reference)not exactly a patient kid.
Wasn't Fisher a impulsive player?(or maybe I confuse with someone else)
Personnaly I can perfectly imagine Alfred being a secret genius :-)

Alfred = Genius Ditz

He's apparently good with computers and airplanes, at the very least. And as mentioned, there's some historical basis for America being good at chess. Not as good as Russia maybe, but somewhere there. I can see him being the type to pull out some really crazy, think-outside-the-box tactics to fight against Russia's elegant, classical style.

now I want a fic about it. And why not as a cold war allegory? with Europe and Asia as chessboard of course.

I haven't played in a while, and I wasn't very good when I did, but I think I'd like to take a shot at ficcing this.

Ooh, I like the thought of him being a secret genius :)

It simply doesn't go with his site that's been depicted in Hetalia, then. It's obvious that he was designed to be, uh, not the brightest, and horrible at reading other people's intentions.

Please ignore my spelling fail... orz

genius ditz, emphasis on ditz

But the bits about him being good with mechanical things is part of his official depiction too. In fact I think it all slots together - the whole, socially-awkward genius-with-inanimate-objects portrayal. Like Mihoshi from Tenchi, or Captain Tylor.

In my little headcanon, Alfred's a secret genius who hides it behind his,well...ditziness? It's all to lower your guard and to not take him too seriously LOL PLus his people skills tend to suck, so I guess it's a defense mechanism :3
