Part 11 comes after Part 10

Part 10 is over! Part 11 is here. If you haven't checked the challenge entry, the challenge has been extended until Part 11 maxes. Hopefully that is enough time for people who are busy with finals and such to find time to enter, if they'd like to!

Should I mention that the number 11 scares me? I really don't like that number. Like how Natalie Portman hated the number 5 (or 6?) in Where the Heart Is. But a higher number. Well, anyway.

Actually not related to the above comment, but reminded because of it.

Hetalia fandom is pretty good about it, but as someone who's not a native speaker everytime I see someone on LJ go "lol learn to write, noob" or some other really down-putting comment when it comes to some minor (or maybe it's just minor in my eye) grammatical error, I get so sad.

The person might have actually tried hard to spell things correctly, but english isn't the most easy language D: I don't mind it if like with above someone points it out politely. But usually the english-speakers are so damn snotty about it. I just want to go "well, you try to write in german/french/italian/spanish whatever and not make a single mistake". I know some are fluent in a second language, but I doubt all those english grammar nazi's who put everyone else down is.

Or maybe I'm overreacting?

"Hetalia fandom is pretty good about it, but as someone who's not a native speaker everytime I see someone on LJ go "lol learn to write, noob"

Though I stand for politeness in making these critiques, I'm all for making them nonetheless. I'm not a native English speaker, and if people hadn't gone "huh, wait, what...?" at my "best efforts" I wouldn't be capable of communicating, period.

"well, you try to write in german/french/italian/spanish whatever and not make a single mistake"

Because you're not supposed to expect that. See, on an English community, you're expected to try to talk in a passable level of ENGLISH if you want to communicate, at least if you want to integrate. Mistakes happen, this is not uncommon, but there's a way of telling between someone who is trying and someone who isn't. Besides that, one's other language skills are irrelevant at the time. Now, if the person this was directed to were to go to a Spanish, German, French or Italian community, and would fail at the language dominating the arena... ahh, now THERE you would have something of a moral authority to poke them a bit.

See, I understand just as well you'd have to point out to people who aren't even trying, and I don't mind being corrected. That's what betas are for. But when someone dismisses you as stupid because of two mistakes in an entire text it makes me rage. Also when it happens to others.

Sure write a little note "Oh you missed this, it's actually supposed to be..." is very appreciated but so much more often it's "It's TOO not TO you idiot, learn the difference before you type anything!". But maybe I've just had bad luck. At least I'd like to think people can understand what I say.

If all English fandoms were just for those who perfectly mastered the english part of the net would grow less interesting I think.

I don't think the rant was focused on "why do you even point out small mistakes". I understood it much more as being annoyed over some grammar nazis pointing out said errors in a rude way.

A bit like the difference between concrit and flames...

No anon, you're not overreacting. I understand when some people bitch about the lack of spellcheck use, but how can someone know that one expression doesn't "sound" right in English. Sure, people can write in their main language, but then comes the issue of people not reading it. Yeah.

Re: language raaant

(Anonymous) 2009-05-22 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I redownloaded firefox in English instead of my own language, just to have spellcheck in English. But there's still no grammar check on it, and a spellcheck doesn't work for everything :/ I understand if people get angry when some non-native speakers doesn't even try, but... I guess I just think grammar is difficult ^^;

And as you say, I'd rather participate in the main western fandom then lock myself to just my countries part of it.

This English-is-not-my-first-language-and-I'm terrified-of-being-called-on-doing-it-wrong anon feels your pain.

It would be nice to work up a system in which kink meme writers could have a beta. Requests sometimes interest me, but as I'm afraid to butcher English, I generally don't get the courage to fill them...

Aaaah, THIS. I don't see that attitude a lot on the kinkmeme, but I'm afraid that is what people would be thinking...

Well, douches are everywhere, you can't run away from them!

I know, I always spend a high (worrying, even) amount of time in every comment or post... And in case I make any mistake I torture myself enough already (/is a perfectionist), I don't need anyone else to put me down!

Also, I'd like to ask you: which do you think is the easiest language, then?

Re: language raaant

(Anonymous) 2009-05-22 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
The easiest language is your native language of course ;)

And even talking about second languages it would be a matter to what is closer to your native language. I actually has far, far more problem with pronouncing English than spelling it, to be honest >.>

It's every time. Not everytime.

"I don't mind it if like with above someone points it out politely" that makes no fucking sense. Do you mean "I don't mind it if like, as stated in the above example" or such?

It's Grammar Nazis. Why the fuck is the apostrophe there?

Gtfo, learn to write.

Re: language raaant

I knew I would get this when I typed that down xD

And ugh I should learn that English writes words like that separately, that's really something I don't get why I keep doing.

But really nazi!anon, I really don't get how to apostrophe in English. Does anyone know what rules applies?

I haven't been told yet I spell words wrong or have a bad grammar, but everytime I wrote a comment, you can't imagine how much I stress out about it.

I wish I can speak english fluently, I'm working on it.

i hate that, too :/ i usually ignore bad grammar and bad spelling, unless it's so bad i can't understand what they are trying to say. and then of course i won't act like a douche over it, i'll just ask them what they meant, or if they meant something else than what they typed out

i have the worst grammar and spellinggg but who cares when you get what i'm sayin?
i don't want to have rules or anything (and i want to use the language however i want)

Re: language raaant

I agree with you partly; most of the rules of grammer and spelling were made up by people and I see no reason to follow them (except maybe on job applications).

Course of, some rules are there follow you must understand you otherwise noone will.

I JUST RECENTLY TRIED TO POST IN A FRENCH COMM

IT WAS TERRIFYING also the comment took me half an hour and I also realized how much fail at french I am. *sobs* They don't teach you how to write colloquially in school! I don't want to sound like an essay when I'm trying to socialize orz....

But yeah, to actually answer your rant, the whole rudeness over a tiny mistake or two is kind of stupid, because I've seen native English speakers who can barely write in English, lol.

I agree, it's sad that native speakers don't appreciate the effort it takes to speak thier language. Personally, I think that as long as the meaning is clear, it's rude to point out people's mistakes unless they ask you to do so.

Vraiment, c'est tres difficle de parle une autre langue. Je suix heureux pas-que je pe parle l'anglais avec tout le monde.

Really, I think if I had to use a second language for my fandoms, I'd go insane.
