Pardon the unsolicited pimping, but I was wondering if you'd read my story "Pay in Kind" (http://afterthoughts.dreamwidth.org/2648.html)? It's both Russia and Prussia centric, but I think I managed to make Russia more of a sympathetic villain in it (and I made Prussia an anti-hero who's just as violent as, if not moreso than, Russia).

If you're not adverse to violence (or some clunky structure, sob), I'd suggest giving it a try. At the very least, there's no default rapist Russia in sight.

Agree with you so fucking hard right now. I'd rather have mad scientist!Russia or kgb!Russia instead because those are roles that have some basis in Russian history.

Besides, default rapist!Russia is so damn boring because no one seems to understand the psychological aspects of it and it's just used as a cheap ploy to further along some shitty h/c plot.

I'm more annoyed by people like you. You can't dictate what people should like. As much I get annoyed that this characters HAS to be such and such with certainty, saying that you have to change it up. Personally, I think it's alright to have fixed position pairings IMO.

- When people use the "history" tangent to ignore canon protrayals of the Nation-tans. I mean, I love how fandom uses history as part of the fiction, but it's not a requisite for it.

- Making a nation more "badass" than they are. I feel once you go "but this nation did blah, blah, blah, they should be more badass", you kinda miss the point of Hetalia, is that the Nation-tans are kinda... no, pretty much fail, which rare occurrences of badass moments. It's like completely uke-ifying a Nation-tan. I mean, I love Finland, but I find him more interesting as a sort of Osaka/Kafuka Fuura type in that they're sweet, with something underlying all of that. Although I agree, I don't see Finland being domestic though.

The whole usa/canada/uk/france happy family, it doesn't actually make me cringe but I'm perplexed.

Contrary to the anon above, I don't really enjoy fics that don't have at least a little historical justification or/and when the authors are too respectful of canon personnality to the point of shallowness ( I think Hetalia is interesting because of the concept, not because Hidekaz is a characterisation genius so taking the character like base for something more solid is a minimum)
For example N. Italy is a lot more interesting when authors dare to give him a real personnality (but I'm biased because I don't really like the way Hidekaz portrait him)

Like said the first anon the characterisation of Russia. Also just after the war, when confronted to America. I mean he lost maybe 17 millions (or 20?) of people and it's like nothing happened.(why he is not in the hospital? or at least very tired and trying to hide it?)

Also whining England and canon couples as happy ever after.
