Part 12 is the loneliest number you could ever do

Woah, did Part 11 seem to end without warning, or was it just me?

The challenge is extended until Part 14 maxes, then a poll will be going up! Thanks for being patient, people who have already entered! :)

Different anon here, and I don't exactly hate UK/France

It's just... I hate when the relationship described is... monogamous, might be the word? I kinda sorta said this in chat (only not really) but in some fics it's like, the author makes it so that, in this case, France and England are dating each other and ONLY each other, and I really don't see that happening ever.

So when they're written as being all "MINE" over the other-- idk, I just can't see it. Like, sure France may get jealous if England is spending a bit more time with Canada or America than him, but not on a possessive level, just a... "we should spend more time together" one. And he's not going to freak out if England is with other nations because he's with other nations himself.

I don't even know if I'm making sense right now because it's pretty late but this is my exact view on every relationship and why I sometimes have a problem with fics in Hetalia and arghhh I can never seem to express my thoughts. :(

Oooh. I'm actually a U.K./France shipper, but I've been curious about the other side of the equation for a long time now, since I don't see a lot of discussion about this pairing.

THIS THIS THIS. I can totally see what you mean--I can see them putting up with each other and only each other if there's no one else left on earth or if it's convenient, but other than that I think of the nations as generally pretty flexible, especially carnally.

Especially if you make sexual play on things like alliances and treaties--there's a fuckload of partnershifting going on throughout history, and it honestly makes no real sense to me to say any one pair should be completely monogamous. I can see slightly more stable relationships in current events in most of Europe than there were previously, but there's still going to be some intrigue and powerplaying going on.

My personal view on the pairing tends to vary according to the fic's setting (especially AUs) and time period, the mood of the fic... heck. XD Lots of factors; I don't think there needs to be any one take on the pairing.

That being said, I think my current favorite interpretation is Never Married, Thrice Divorced, so to speak. They have a lengthy history together and are generally aware of and play off each other throughout history, but that doesn't necessary translate into sexual or relationship nature/emotional continuity (see above about shiftings in alliances/the balance of power) -- unless it's for pissing each other off or one-upping each other.

(Also, the whole 'possessive' thing -- the closest I'd take that, realistically, would be the breaking of an agreement/alliance and other things that would spark more violent feelings.)

... I-I'm sorry I'll shut up now. XD

See, I like them too, and their dynamic is always intiguing and amusing - and I may have gotten over my head because I don't want to argue against shipping them - but, see I agree with you there.

Obviously AUs are a different case entirely, and I'm not against them being with each other and only with each other there, because, well, it's AU. And if it's set in a certain time period where one was really helping each other out then yeah, I can see that too - it's the fics where it's just England/France doing something and they're put to be together like they won't be with anyone else.

And I can see the possessive thing too, if there's a reason behind it and not just "stay away I had it first" mentality on whoever's being possessive's part - some of this is also coming from my US/UK rant because that pairing really does it a lot, but I'll keep that out because there's enough ranting about that.

I have read really well written France/England, though, so I'm sorry for giving you the most boring discussion ever. I just wanted to let it out here that I hate when there is no context as to why England and France are in a monogamous relationship, because that's what everyone seems to want to do, maybe because it's easier. I don't know. It's just - when there's no background it makes me kinda rage a little because then it's really not making any sense and it just ruins things for me.

... I might have just turned this into something completely different though, orz. My bad.

Ahaha, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to put pressure on you to argue for or against, I mostly just wanted to bat some opinions around. :)) Sorry. Once you get me started (especially on something I haven't had the opportunity to discuss a lot) I tend to go on and on and on. XD;;

In a certain sense, I can sympathize with the people writing and reading and enjoying the pairing in a bubble, since it's a good quick fix for a craving if you're looking for an easy resolution and so on, but I can also see the rub if you're looking for something a little more realistic.

And oh good lord, don't get me started on U.S./U.K. either. XD I'll just say that the whole "possessive" thing immediately put me in mind of that pairing too, since a lot of work for it tends to emphasize that aspect and the monogamy a lot more--and everything else a lot less.

Right. Anyway, It's just - when there's no background it makes me kinda rage a little because then it's really not making any sense and it just ruins things for me. I am with you here, especially since a big part of the reason I love them in the first place is that hundreds and hundreds of years of rival dynamic. It's the alternately snarling at each other and joining up across the Channel and the almost comfortable familiarity underneath it all that really makes them one of my favorite historical dynamics, whether we're talking Hetalia or not.

Pfft, no worries. It's not like we're having a formal debate or something. :>

Oh, good. D: Yeah no, I actually love hearing others opinions, so I'm always all for having these discussions but then, I can be sometimes fickle when it comes to small random things and I end up agreeing with them because they sway me. But!

I can see the other side of just wanting to write a pairing to soothe others but it's like, I prefer when there's more context and stuff because at the bottom of everything, we're talking about COUNTRIES and it's not just black and white; there's a lot more to what they do, and it seems that sometimes people forget that.

I'm sorry for even bringing that pairing up because I could really go on forever, and I really wanted to like it it's just that 98% of the fic for it seems to be... exactly what you said. And it's just jsjdkaslk. But yeah, I think it's the only pairing that I really don't like reading.

Agreed so hard with you there. And again, people seem to forget that! It's frustrating, to have all this potential (because, really, England and France have so much history that it would be pretty hard to just... ignore it), and then the author just doesn't even bother with it at all, or throws it out the window, and it's like "you could have been great! D:"

But don'tchaknow, the anon meme is SERIOUS BUSINESS. :)
