like others said, it depends on the gift. it also depends on the relation. and it depends on how much time has passed.

friend gives me a thing casually, no big, i can donate it or whatever a few months down the line.

friend gives me an expensive thing (expensive for them) and/or one they made themselves and/or one that has a particular value like to commemorate our friendship in some way? i feel i need to keep that shirt. it could be a ugly as fuck shirt that i never wear except in this friend's presence, but i need to keep it.

and if it is an heirloom/irreplaceable/sentimental value, i feel like that's a definite keep for a long time at least, and if i really didn't want to keep it (no space, whatever), i should offer to give it back to the person who gave it to me, or give it to their family. i do not wear jewelry. i have been gifted some jewelry from my grandparents, and it's going to sit in a box forever but it means a lot to me because it means a lot to them. it truly is the thought that counts here, not whether or not i can make use of it.

likewise, time matters. like if i bought you something and you gave/sold it a week later, that is pretty damn rude and while i wouldn't necessarily get mad at you (i'll chalk it up to different sensibilities/culture) believe me i won't be spending much time or money on future gifts to you since you clearly don't care as much as i do. if i bought you something and you give/sell it months or a year later, it matters less - unless the thing was very significant in some way.

in all cases, i find it more acceptable to donate vs selling.
