TBH the relationship between Ukraine and Russia is really fucking weird. Everything seems to contradict other things.

It really is
The weirdest thing when I had my Russian sociology class was how Ukraine was listed as an "enemy" of Russia

As far as I understand Russians consider they're "taking on" Ukraine's burdens and that's what's keeping them from being a superpower or something along those lines
Ukraine on the other hand is incredibly split with the ideas of Russia and it's not even so much pro Russia vs pro West but more pro Russia vs my-fucking-God-isn't-Ukraine-great!?

This is actually what I'm really interested in studying for my terrified attempts at looking at grad schools just how Ukrainians see themselves and their identities and how it's been changing and how it might change in the future as Ukraine experiences some major brain drain, population decline, and soaring unemployment

In the scheme of Hetalia where that's like her only solid characterization and to feel like: http://lonewolfsden.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/itn-that-cute-small.png

I like to think of their relationship as pretty complex in Hetalia too. Ukraine loves Russia but wouldn't trust him as far as she could throw him in regards to anything political. Russia loves Ukraine, but finds her annoying a lot of the time and puts pressure on her without really realizing it.

And she misses seeing him a lot but would turn and sprint away if Russia ever suggested that she come live with him again.

Their relationship hasn't been healthy since the fall of Kievan Rus' let's be honest
If I have to hear one more discussion on who's the rightful successor I'm going to scream

There's a lot of love and affection that especially built up during and after WWII and I think she blindly trusts him more than she lets on considering how much the West goes "Goddamnit Ukraine!" but her trust of others seems to be a problem
Which is why I found a news article about people wanting to pressure Canada into pressuring Ukraine to fix up their act and join the EU?

It's just so complicated and it's part of why I like it!

He's her sibling but they really didn't spend that much time with one another until the 1700's because Russia was just "we're family and we need to be together forever"
She's very much into the "blood is thicker than water" idea

Politics and nation stuff aside she loves her brother more than anything and I think that's the problem is taking Russia with all their historical, political and economic baggage
She wants Russia but she doesn't want what Russia represents to her
