I agree with pretty much all of this, especially the bit about normal people. Even if the government or their bosses themselves didn't treat them differently, their people would when they interacted with them. It doesn't even have to do with "female personifications encourage feelings of protection" as much as it does how an average, everyday person who has no idea who they are would view them.

Sorry for the late reply, I saw this when I woke up and thought it was interesting!

No it's fine, I really love talking about this kind of stuff! /even later reply.

And yeah, I think since canon establishes without photography and mass media the general population didn't know who they are, the whole idea of 'they see and treat nations differently' kind of falls apart imo. Sure bosses and fellow soldiers can buy into 'X is the exception' but not everyone will.

...and then this poor idiot has to idolize a sexist boss, so yeah I think about this topic a lot. lol.

It's good to have someone else to talk about it with! Poor Julchen :( I read that thread last night.

I don't think it would be as big of a deal if the nations only lived with each other all the time, but they obviously don't, so imagine all their daily interactions with normal people who have certain expectations of a "lady." She would have been expected to be straight-laced at all times or risk social annihilation. Don't even get me started on her being "allowed" into battle as anything but a nurse. She's hard-headed enough to do it anyway, but dealing with fellow soldiers would have been hard (and still is). Julchen would have likel had it worse in a more military-oriented culture (not that America isn't).

America's big saving grace would have been just how much wilderness she could get lost in. (And I fully believe she took advantage of it for her own personal growth.) Another would be that she never had to undergo the medieval concepts of chivalry and women.

tl;drs forever

Yeah I mean to me the big deal is how they're perceived. Nations like Austria who wear the long dresses have the long hair (Julchen's was shorter than Gilbert's until the 1700s which is a long ass time to look like a shaved street urchin when you're born before the year 1000) and are polite and courteous and generally fit into society's standards for what women should be were probably given a lot more of a pass than Miss Army with a Country here.

Plus power is also a big deal, the stronger the nation the more likely people would let the gender things slide. Very misogynistic countries still had queens so I figure Empires like Austria, England, and France probably secured some distance from it all for themselves. At least in court or in their capitals where they'd frequent. But upstarts like Prussia and later America, yeah not so much.

The thing about last night was that the 13th century sucked, I mean I don't think 18th or 19th century Prussia was that oppressed by the man but you know child + woman + christian crusaders is probably the worst combination of things ever.

Poor baby. No wonder she's a little demon, I can't imagine the constant abuse. How do you think she was treated when men grew accustomed to her presence?

America probably dreamed of being like that, once, then discovered it was really boring and she doesn't have that much finesse and isn't she supposed to be a good girl anyway? No maturity or feminine charms. And don't get me started on her views on relationships and romance, those Puritan years had a long-lasting effect on her.

She probably had longish hair she either left down or braided for a long time until the turn of the 20th century when she chopped a lot of it off and never looked back.

Yeah I'm thinking America's wasn't quite that bad, but she had her fair share of sexism from both cultured cityfolk and rough and tumble explorers. Thankfully a lot of her people would gave either been settlers or a few generations past that for a while, which mostly breeds independence for people of both sexes. But her inability to do any sort of commercial dealings without a man to sign off on it would've been a thorn in her side, even out on the frontier.

The problem with the Teutonic Knights, compared to all the countries around her, is that they weren't a country. There was no culture, or literature, or art, or anywhere she could take refuge in. She didn't even have citizens, just her (usually Austrian) boss and her fellow Knights. They were just a group of soldiers who thought they had a God (and Pope and Holy Roman Emperor) give right to kill Muslims and other non-Christians in the Holy Land. So to a group of people with no land, whose existence depends on their ability to fight and slaughter, it's kind of embarrassing to have their treaties and negotiations to live on other people's land while doing their crusading to be facilitated by an eight year old looking girl. And I think they were very harsh on her, she has to be tough and monstrous and slaughter without remorse because they don't want to deal with 'how tough can they be represented by a little girl?' getting in the way of their goals.

So I think it was an awkward balancing act, because for a land-less, culture-less, group of mercenaries having a personification at all gave them legitimacy, but they were embarrassed that her very existence could also be a weakness. They let her fight, trained her to be vicious and overcome the perceived weakness of her sex, but she still had to follow chastity laws and by God did she ever know that Eve was the reason man was kicked out of the Garden of Eden. So she still got to do the nation things she needed to do, but no one liked her, all the pressure was on to Not Fuck UP Woman.

Of course once they genocided the Old Prussians and actually became a State everything chilled out a lot more. Instead of answering to Hungary (a male nation) they answered to Poland (a female nation) so there was less pressure from her own bosses about her inherent differentness. But that took ~300 years. And then this asshole in my icon comes along 200 years later, sigh.

And I like to think she saw a lot of herself in America, and probably tempered the scary as hell military training with a reality check about being a woman among soldiers. Because God knows England didn't do it. But also buhyoo America with long braids, that would have been so cute.

Oh man I bet she was the best, strictest teacher ever. Taking a tomboyish girl who was used to skirts and sewing and such to war training. I've always wanted to explore that more! And for there to be more fem nations on the meme, like England and such so they could do history fun times. I can dream, right?

I want to pick your brain for more headcanon *A* She's had a really interesting past!

I really love the potential for America and Prussia's dynamics during the revolution, especially with the ladies. One day if we wish hard enough all the lady nations will be at our disposal.

I looooove trying to get actual history to mesh with her especially because there's so much of it (no offense to our lovely motherland, but yeah.) If you can handle my tl;dr pick me anytime *w*
