I can't speak for anyone else, but I used to feel that there's so much Spamano subtext in canon that if I don't acknowledge that somehow by giving them a romantic past, requited or not, I'm coming off as a delusional shipper who is ignoring canon in favour of her OTP. I don't feel that way anymore, but it used to affect my writing a lot.
