I've been asked to draw an illustration for the planned 40 year anniversary tribute to Black Jack which will be titled Pinoko Tribute Acchonburike! and is scheduled to appear in Princess's November 2013 issue!

Just the name Black Jack brings to mind a very cool sort of character, so I'm glad I know that he's actually a charming and very human-like character who is frail because of his weak stomach, still goes to his elementary school class reunions, suddenly flies into a rage whenever his face or his mother are insulted, and can be overwhelmed by Pinoko. It seems like various things have been planned in honor of Black Jack's 40th anniversary.

The series is a manga by Osamu Tezuka (I think there's also an anime adaptation but I haven't seen it yet). Black Jack's the title character; he's a world-famous surgeon who practices without a license. A bit of a Robin Hood figure - he charges mind-boggling amounts of money for his services to those who are able to pay for it, but when it comes to those who are truly in need, he gives his aid when he can. He acts like an ass to those who deserve it, and has a reputation as a swindler and a criminal because of the aforementioned high charges and licenseless practice, but at the same time he's a very kind, compassionate person.

I highly recommend reading the comics if you can find them. I liked them so much that I bought all 17 of the volumes - and I'm normally not a completionist.
