I think people forget that the French Revolution was motherfucking complicated and complex and there was no black and white, just 2082389742389 shades of grey. Yes. That many shades of grey.

But I think part of it is that it is really hard to write shades of grey. So they just go WELP ____ WAS EVIL AND FRANCE HATED/LOVED _____ and tha'ts that.
