part 347 dimensions of sight and sound

and of mind. Do do do do do do do do do do do.

How was your end-of-December-into-January time, meme? Did you make any New Year's resolutions? Or light a candle in your window in the hopes that Himaruya would update again instead of leaving us behind like an 19th century light house keeper's wife whose husband has gone off to sea? ... Did you?

Enjoy part 347!

They're dorks and kind of want to like each other in modern day, but animosity is still there

Russia thinks he's so much more mature than this kid, but stoops to his level all the time

This is one pairing I like more in AUs without the history.

They're always portrayed as rivals in human AUs like highschool AUs, but honestly I think they'd actually be friends without all that history. Even with all of the history they still act more like frenemies in canon. They're both fun-loving and often cheerful, I think they would get along.

tl;dr incoming

So this isn't my OTP per se but let me tell you what I have some FEELINGS about hateloveshipping this pairing that I've been drafting for a while.

The anons above me are right that America and Russia are similar in lots of fun ways, so that makes pitting them against each other all the more satisfying. They're not like fire and ice so much as two sides of the same coin. They're two huge superpowers, and they both want to call the shots. They both get fiercely competitive, and hate to back down. They're both children even though they're fully grown adults. They always think they're right. Of course they're going to clash.
(And they're both sentimental about keeping old useless stuff, but this is more like one thing they'd agree on rather than fight over.)

After this is where things start to diverge and America and Russia go to the opposite sides of that coin, and all of this is why I prefer to stay out of AUs for this ship. First, consider that Russia is much older than America, and reached the height of his power through painful developments. To condense centuries of rocky history, he has seen some SHIT. Meanwhile, America is much younger and was able to become adept at war and trade while mostly minding his own business. America did live in some fear of his neighbors trying to make his life miserable, and there were some fights over land, but the modern relationship American-Canadian relationship in particular is really damn good and there's little resentment. America flaunts it like he's got it made. That is not how things happened in the Old World.
I think Russia really resents America for having it so easy. Not only that, but America is careless with his successes so Russia thinks him quite foolish.
America, on the other hand, sees Russia as someone living in the past, emotionally and sometimes functionally. And he paints Russia as the Anti-America. What's that up ahead? It's Russia getting in America's way again. What a pain in the ass.
And remember that they both hang onto old sentiments for a really long time.

And as a side-point, Russia couldn't make friends with a tiny hamster, while America got an alien and a giant whale to be his friends. But the alien's a dick and the whale is a whale, so make of that what you will. I want this ship to be America and Russia in a relationship that's like an arm-wrestling match - hostile and combative but also intimate and a little bit sweaty.

The way I see it, they're two assholes who deserve each other.

"The way I see it, they're two assholes who deserve each other."

That's beautiful, anon. The truest love there ever was.

But the biggest obstacle I have with RussAme is how do they even get to the point of a relationship that goes beyond competitive animosity? It seems like a big hurdle to jump over given both their personalities.

I know, and it's probably one of the things that keeps this ship from being my OTP, and I don't want to handwave it by saying "Oh, it started as hatesex but then it turns out there was other stuff". I don't read a whole lot of fic for this, either, since not much suits my tastes and I'm also lazy, so I haven't absorbed many ideas from other RusAme shippers. Hm.
Maybe they found a way to connect using their sentimentalism for the past. They would have to start respecting each other just a little. Then they could move away from a sucker-punch kind of relationship to an arm-wrestle kind of relationship. Just a little more structure and regulation. That is what I want.

So if you were to compare it to something, FrUK would be louder and more animated in their fights than RusAme, but France and England have also been growing up next to each other for centuries and centuries and they already do have a relationship that goes beyond competitive animosity. So it's not exactly like that, but it would be in the same neighborhood? The same city?

I imagine Russia's and America's fights would be very passive aggressive and fought through proxy of everyone they know. The whole world gets tired of their shit.
