WELL. I love their canon interactions. I love how Lithuania has endured a massive amount of suffering at Russia's hands, blames him for everything, and wants to keep lots of distance. Yet Lithuania also knows that Russia has gone through plenty of shit himself, and understands him more than many ever could. He has that big brother instinct and it will extend even to that bastard, causing him all the more problems. I like the idea that he knows Russia is strangely attracted to him, and he's really creeped out by it, but also knows he can make Russia happy for a few seconds and maybe he'll take the chance to comfort him.

(I might enjoy Russia/Ukraine for similar reasons but all we see of their relationship is fluffy sibling love with occasional thorns of passive-aggression or manipulation. I also get nightmares every time I read about Russian-Ukrainian history, not even exaggerating.)

On Russia's side, I think his feelings were, at first, just about gaining territory around a sea and having another subordinate. Lithuania happened to be the main target because he was the "primary" Baltic. But Russia grew fond of Lithuania's kind personality, and has fun with his short fuse. It grew into a widdle crush, even if Russia still sees him, and the rest of his subordinates, as his children, little siblings or toys. But Lithuania's also the one who can leave most easily, and if he leaves the other Baltics will follow, so Russia becomes more and more possessive and gets the wrong idea about their relationship. In modern day, with Lithuania gone from Russia and fully rehabilitated with Poland, Russia's still not completely over him and those feelings of loss and nostalgia are still pent up and released with stalking.

This ship is fucked up and unhealthy for both of them and I love it.

I love this pairing and for almost all of the reasons you described in particular, too. I never thought of Lithuania's 'big brother instinct' like that, though, but it fits so well. Yes. Good.

Another thing that colors this relationship for me is that scene of babu Lithuania and babu Russia, where Lithuania tries to introduce himself but Russia rebuffs him. Instead he vows to become stronger and THEN they can be friends. (And then Hetalia ignores a lot of the history from that time up to when they're both adults which was not always pretty, but apparently we're ignoring it.) So later when Russia really is big and powerful it's like hey, now they can be friends, right, except his definition of friends looks even more fucked-up than it did hundreds of years ago. And if we're shipping them, that's even more than friends and oh hell, what a mess that is. And what does Lithuania think, if he'd treated Russia differently, if he'd done something differently, would the two of them have developed differently? What does Russia blame Lithuania for? What does Lithuania blame himself for?
It's fucked up and we love it, amen.
