part 347 dimensions of sight and sound

and of mind. Do do do do do do do do do do do.

How was your end-of-December-into-January time, meme? Did you make any New Year's resolutions? Or light a candle in your window in the hopes that Himaruya would update again instead of leaving us behind like an 19th century light house keeper's wife whose husband has gone off to sea? ... Did you?

Enjoy part 347!

Unwakable

The sensation as he tried to awaken was unmistakable. It was a low, terrible feeling that he had remembered but wished he had forgotten; tingling but numb, dragging up and down his arms like poison and pressing down on him like an ocean of water. Heavy and unforgiving. He tried to lift his arms and thought, oh please, let them move. Yet nothing did move.

Slowly, with a certain pensiveness, he opened his eyes. They fell just as dull and heavy as the rest of him, alas. He stared above him. The ceiling was grey and weathered and dripped--he hoped--a trickle of water nearby. The air around him was cold and wet, and he knew, he knew what he would see if he sat up and looked around.

The dungeon walls, hanging with chains, smelling of blood and sweat and the pungent scent of corpse decay. And, he would see, would confirm with his eyes, what he knew that morning... what he had known every morning since he had been punished.

His arms were missing. No, not missing. They had been cut off, quickly but with much pain and no remedy. And they were no doubt being displayed somewhere, he suspected, to make an example to the other nations in his charge. Do not disobey.

Or you may find yourself without a hand to feed you.

Look on the bright side, unknown nation! You can now make puns about how disarmingly charming you are.

I was raised to be charming, not sincere
