It's been going on in other fandoms for a while now. I can't remember where it was, but someone made a big Tumblr post about it with reasons why it's offensive and suggested an alternative way of calling it.

I can't really bring myself to care about this. When it comes to genderbending or whatever you want to call it, there are other issues with the potential to bother me more than what it's called.

What always grinds my gears is the assumption on Tumblr that as long as someone is offended they are in the right.

I don't get the 'genderbend' issue. To me it just means the character is swapped to the opposite of what their current gender identification is. Something like Hetalia, where most characters show no signs of being anything but cisgender whatever they are, their opposite would be cisgender of the other gender.

But Nyotalia isn't just sex swap. As far as we can tell they identify as females too.

What is strange is that they're not just female/male versions of the original characters so they're not genderbend in the first place. They're just different characters.
