I am so glad I discovered the kink meme when I did (part 6). Since there weren't many parts yet, I could back-read through the other parts, and requesting was still slow enough to not be overwhelmed. At first, I stuck with cute non-pairing things, then I slowly (or not-so-slowly) climbed the ladder up to porn. I had never really read smutty fanfiction before, and was so awkward about sex that I needed to convince myself that I didn't know the content of fills before I read them. After a few months of that, I was actually comfortable enough to seek out PWPs and fap to them, and now I can request porn exactly suiting to my tastes and am not embarrassed anymore.

The anonymous atmosphere of the km allowed me to get over my embarrassment, and the personal request format led me to sift through all sorts of kinks that other people like and find out what my favorites are.

TLDR, the km was (and is) and outlet for me to explore and express my sexuality in a safe way.

PS I also found the anonmeme through the kink meme, so without it, I wouldn't be hanging out here.
