part 348 candles in the lighthouse window

Hey meme! How are you doing? What is up? Do you also have a candle lit in your window for the return of Himaruya? like anon who is a light house wife! I hope he returns from the sea soon, with stories of adventure and sea monsters and the life outside the island. Ah, Himaruya. Safe journeys. Safe... journeys.

Enjoy part 348!

Russia that Olympic opening made me uncomfortable.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-07 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
What happened? Nobody on twitter seems to be blowing up angrily yet so I dunno.

to me it seems like they're trying to say

LOOK AT US RUSSIA IS A WONDERFUL COUNTRY THAT HAD NO CORRUPTION AT ALL DURING OUR HISTORY

but maybe that's just me

and it's not really different from other olympics ceremonies but there you go

Re: diff

That seems......pretty commonplace actually. Why would they talk about the bad stuff during the Olympic opening ceremony?

That's like saying that if America had something that went through its history during the Olympics, it should totally represent the enslavement of an entire race and the genocide of another.

I'm more upset that they had a whole section on Russian conquest when that's something that negatively affected a large number of countries that are competing.

Playing the trololo song during a segment about men and women (no gays allowed!!!) getting married wasn't cool either.

I....don't think they regard that song the way the rest of the world does.

But they should still be aware of how it's used outside their country. Ignorance isn't an excuse.

Check the history on the song and the guy who sang it

They're well aware of what it means outside their country. They're one of the biggest nations that is on the internet/Livejournal all the damn time.

Not to mention it was during the late 20th century the song was made, the title being "I Am Glad, 'Cause I'm Finally Returning Back Home".

It was a bizarre mix, but I actually liked the tribute to the avant-garde.

ngl it was like

if japan tries to showcase its military considering all the shit they did at the 2020 olympics

hopefully they wouldn't do that but

It was rather fun to watch, most of what made it uncomfortable to others just blew over my head or I interpreted another way. That or I apparently don't bother interpreting certain actions during a show too much at all and just enjoy it as performance art.

Very good use of props above the stadium and the lighting.

"ignorance is bliss", eh?

Let's just say I view opening ceremonies first as a performance and art before as possible political messages to others.

So not really.

uh

we didn't have a meme to complain on during China, did we?

Re: diff

I mean in general not just on meme. Russia deserves to be protested against but we have a bad habit of ignoring other problems when we focus on one.

Re: diff

(Anonymous) 2014-02-07 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
the main thing i remember about china's opening ceremony was that it got criticized for being, in an odd way, too-well-mass-choreographed? like it was an expression of authoritarianism, holding so much power and exact control and synchronization over an abnormally large crowd of people on the stage.
i don't remember much other criticism, my memory's failing at the moment.
