Something that this article and the "malicious glee" tweets don't mention: there are perfectly fine hotels in Sochi as well, my mom has a friend in the media who's had no problems at all where he's staying. The bad hotels are generally the ones which took reservations from networks and then waited too long to actually start building.

I read that about 97% of hotels are just fine, but then there are those 3% that have some serious problems.

Exactly. But it's always easier to accentuate the negative...

Also: I'm just as annoyed with @sochiproblems' stereotypical Bad Russian Accent as this article is but uhhh I think the account knows it's not actually peach juice. That's.... kind of the joke.

How is this good? The article is stereotyping as much as the "Americans" are. Americans weren't the only ones cashing in on Sochi's disastrous planning. Americans aren't the only ones who can speak English and tweet either. Is the UK a third world country that Brits won't complain about substandard service? I honestly don't feel sympathetic towards the Russian organizers or to the government.

The Olympics is a world stage, they had four years to prepare themselves for this. This is the state they've presented when they've opened their doors and their own lack of preparation leaves them open to criticism. Which they've received. Which we should be applauding because it airs out Russia's dirty laundry. It provides incentive for the government to sweep in and be efficient. Where did 5 billion dollars go?

It's not about being pampered or sheltered, it's about meeting a pretty basic standard of modern living that even troubled countries like Brazil met. I don't believe clean drinking water is too much to ask. It's a human rights violation for anyone to deal with poisonous water. Russia has no excuse to have contaminated water. If anything, the trouble in Sochi displays Russia's own corrupt and inept government. It's revealing of it's own turmoil and struggling. It's not embarrassing to "Americans" at all. If anyone is to be ashamed, it's Russians. The hosts should see to that their Guests needs are met. These are professional athletes, not college students. Why should they expect less?

...The article is mentioning both Americans and Brits multiple times.

but it's fun to imply Americans are entitled assholes for wanting water that won't burn or kill them and not have their hotel room doors opened at night!

The thing is, I can see both sides here and everyone involved is being equally terrible imo

-The higher-ups responsible for building hotels/facilities/etc. had a lot of money and a lot of time. Anyone who lives in a city or near one has probably seen a building go up in a year or even less (I have and I live in a TINY city. it's possible). They had a responsibility to treat the workers fairly, check in on the projects to make sure they were getting done, etc. They didn't do that, apparently. They should absolutely get ripped to shreds for that in the media. They should be ripped to shreds for allowing their people to live in those conditions year-round. They should be shown to be corrupt. I wish that was what's coming out of this whole thing. Frankly if any government can't accomplish basic tasks when provided with the resources then it is no longer functional as a government. They should not get a free pass. Anyone who is not directly responsible, though (e.g. the hotel staff, waiters, etc.), should not get the blame and a lot of the Sochi Problems tweets seem to focus on the people who are just trying their best and paint them in a bad light.

-The people posting to the Sochi Problems twitter don't seem to realize that there are people who live with this stuff every day. An informed viewer can look at those tweets and say "well, shit--there are Russian people who have that nasty water coming out of their taps all the time," but from what I've seen very few of the reporters have indicated that kind of thinking. It's just "oh haha incompetent Russians," which is biased, bad reporting. There's a story behind all this and the fact that they aren't giving me all the information indicates they don't care.

The "Russian" English is just stupid, frankly. English is hard to learn if you're a Russian speaker and Russian is hard to learn as an English speaker. There are different alphabets, grammar rules, etc. That's really basic knowledge and it's just ridiculous for anyone to be making fun of people who went to the effort of at least trying to learn English. But then a lot of Americans seem to think that anyone who doesn't speak flawless English is a great target for jokes.

I'm just sort of disgusted with all of it I guess. To everyone's credit, so far the events have mostly gone smoothly and the only dangers that have been present that I'm aware of are injury and disqualification (as it should be tbh)
