part 349 heart shaped chocolates

Hi meme! Happy Valentine's day! I hope you have a sweet one. (Get it? Sweet? Because... chocolates and candies. Yeahhh.) Sadly, I don't think a candle in the window for Himaruya has led him home--yet. It's all very romantically tragic. Or tragically romantic. I don't know.

Enjoy part 349!

I really like reading about the perspective of the German civilian experiences (both in non-fiction and through historical fiction) during WW2 but I feel like saying I enjoy those books is frowned upon because it "humanizes" the Nazi regime.

Although the "A Woman in Berlin" film was absolutely atrocious. Making it into a war-torn love story, really, filmmakers? Complete with jealous female soldier? Wtf.

The author wrote multiple times in the book and it's very clear that a) it was rape (though she says something like "is it rape, anymore? we are trying to get food and a little security to protest ourselves from the masses, so we agree, so we pretend") b) it was not romantic, it was not love, it was not even affection. She agreed to be "his" because doing so protected her, somewhat, from the brutal and constant gang rapes done by the other soldiers. As soon as she was gone, she was not sad or forlorn because she missed her Russian soldier--she was worried because there went her biggest source of protection against violent rape.

I think I know what you mean. There was controversy a few years ago surrounding a book about the thousands upon thousands of German civilians who died during the forced relocation in Europe after Germany's defeat in WW2--mostly the elderly, women and children, who were often left alone after the death or imprisonment of their husbands/sons/fathers and were vulnerable to starvation, disease, rape, etc. It happened. It's a fact. Yet it's controversial to discuss because bringing up that they suffered from the actions of the Allies is somehow seen as an automatic approval of German war crimes? It's strange.

Classical music and whether to search out country-specific composers or not.

I wish I didn't get so angry randomly over things that it doesn't make sense to be angry about.

While I needed a haircut, I would have been content with losing two inches. I did not need to lose five.

My hair is now shoulder-length for the first time in roughly a decade. It feels rather odd.
