Plushenko was almost paralyzed. Yet the Russian media is crucifying him. He'll never skate again due to this injury.

It is, sorry to say. He's saying he'll try for 2018 to save face, since the Russian media + Russian fans are being really gross about the injury.

The injury he took literally broke a screw in his back that was supposed to keep until he has back surgery later this year. If he had continued doing jumps, it could have dislocated a disc in his back that could have lead to paralysis.
