We've been here over a year now! I can hardly believe it! Dreamwidth's been pretty good, I'd say, with almost no downtime to speak of and all that! Anyway... how is your spring going? Or I guess it's almost summer, isn't it? Hopefully it's been well! I've been catching up on work and new movies, all very exciting stuff, I'm sure.

Edge of Tomorrow.

I loved it, actually! Thank you, rottentomatoes.com, because honestly from the promotional material and synopsis (D-Day but with aliens, Tom Cruise saves world for the umpteenth time, blah blah) I wouldn't have been interested BUT the reviews piqued my interest and I gotta say, so far this year, this one beats Godzilla and Pacific Rim for most satisfying action movie. It's probably up there with Inception for my favorite scifi flicks.

Mainly it benefits from a brisk - and sometimes delightfully dark - sense of humor to complement the overall sense of urgency. And Cage is waaay more likable than 90% of Tom Cruise characters, precisely because he starts out an arrogant, self-serving coward (but his is an understandable cowardice; can any of us say we'd not try to weasel out of near-certain death given a chance?) and you get to see him grow and change - not only in terms of battle prowess, but also perspective and responsibility.

I'm only iffy about the ending - though, to be fair, all of these mindfucky-timefucky movies are bound to have some holes and this one's internal logic still held up much better than certain others (Looper, for example). [Highlight for spoilers] Still, to me the ending was a little bit too "have your cake and eat it too" just to grant everyone a happy ending. Alright, I get that he merged with the omega last second and got the power to set back time again, but even so it would've still set him back to a time when the omega was alive - he should've had to do another playthrough, so to speak, to get it right AND get out of the way to prevent a reset after the win, and I doubt he could've managed that without losing some/most/all of the rest of the team. And if the omega's alpha realized it was in danger, then surely the omega should've used its reset power right then, deliberately killing one of its alphas to start over and save itself?? I mean, I guess it didn't realize in time that he'd pulled the grenade pins but still why not just reset the moment J Squad attacked its lair, as soon as it was aware that they knew its true whereabouts? Was it trying to capture Crane alive still, unaware that he'd lost the power? Besides which, how the fuck was Crane's body not blown to bits, so that we got to have this graceful swirly scene with the alien blood rising up to meet him? And... does this mean if he should die in the future he'd get a reset, too?

ETA: And they should've kept the title All You Need Is Kill. Edge of Tomorrow is perhaps a more elegant title, but too generic imo.

Me too. I don't even care if he just blogs pictures of cats and talks about his new projects instead of hetalia. All I want is some sort of blog update.
