part 353 whalers on the moon

We've been here over a year now! I can hardly believe it! Dreamwidth's been pretty good, I'd say, with almost no downtime to speak of and all that! Anyway... how is your spring going? Or I guess it's almost summer, isn't it? Hopefully it's been well! I've been catching up on work and new movies, all very exciting stuff, I'm sure.

Enjoy part 353!

Can you recognise any trends in the smaller corners of the Hetalia fandom? Are certain kinks really popular among fans of a certain pairing or character? Do you feel the behavior or attitude of fans is different, or do fans of a certain group hang out on a different site from the others etc?

you could use hand-picked "historical facts" to make any country a total Sue

or the complete opposite

I've run into a lot of Germancest fans who are really, really into history, especially 19th century history. Like, they can quote philosophers or poets from that era, describe the clothes and attitudes and everything and write their fics in this really nice prose. They seem so well-read and educated that I'm kind of afraid of approaching them because they'd probably think I'm an idiot who's only into it for the hot sex.

There are tons of trends for the Nordic side of the fandom, but I'm drawing a blank right now as to what they actually are. Er.

As for kinks - crossdressing (mostly with Norway, though I also see it with Finland and Iceland sometimes). Hatesex (DenSve). Narrative of conflict that ends with affection -- pretty much all of them. Stockholm and/or Lima syndrom with Sve/Nor and Sve/Fin. Powerplay/dominance - mostly with Den/Nor, often done in a way that's against canon characterization.
(Edit: I forgot domesticity. This is largely with Sve/Fin though Den/Nor fans like it too. ... It's usually modern setting, and for some reason even when it isn't AU a lot of the time it seems to imply they're living together, which is just weird.)

Nordic fandom has its own wanks too, of course... The big ones have been fanon name wank and minor shipwars (which I thought were over but apparently at least one person wants to keep it alive. Uh.)

A lot of the fanworks with history settings tend to be written by fans from northern Europe... though by no means all. And the author being from there doesn't indicate anything about the quality, though the historical/cultural details are more likely to be correct (but not always).

Back when LJ was still majorly used, I'd say at least 60% of Nordic fandom activity in WFen took place at Kalmarunionen rather than the main comm. I feel like there was a really strong, friendly community at Kalmarunionen and I really miss it.

Prumano fans aren't very interested in history. It's all college AUs, coffee shop AUs, rock band AUs and so on. Whatever fics use the canon verse tend to take place in the modern day and ignore all the nation aspects, except if it's used as a reason for angsting about how they aren't real nations.

I guess it makes sense since the two don't have the kind if shared history that would be common knowledge to most people, so you have to go and do actual research if you want to write historical fic.

About two years ago there was this phase when it was suddenly in fashion to make Romano top and turn him into a macho sex god, but I guess that has lost its novelty.

Everyone into it only for the hot sex, they just quote history to look like they're above all that.

It's a really eye-opening experience to look at your old comments. My LJ goes back to 2004 and whenever I get too snobby about how Tumblr is full of stupid teenagers, all I have to do is take a look at what I wrote at that age and... yeah.

It really is... I'm so glad I hadn't found internet communities in my early teens. I had to backbutton from my own comment and it wasn't even a flame or anything like that

Actually, anyone as rapists. But specially these three.

Japan? As in, raping China during WWII, or is there more behind this idea?

Japan raping China during WWII is what I've seen the most, but I remember a fic where he raped pretty much every single nation that was under the thumb of the Japanese Empire until WWII. (OC's included, I think) That was, uh, ew.

I also remember some fics with China raping Taiwan and Hong Kong, but these were really old and most likely lost forever. And were also all kinds of ew.

Part of my very first LJ entry, from 2004:

"I could probably try to fill this place by telling something about my fanfics, but I think no one really cares. Besides, who is going to even read this? ... ...

... Yes, I have a self-esteem problem."

And then it's just more whining about my life. Whenever I complain about getting older, I'll try to remember how insufferable I was as a teenager.
