part 353 whalers on the moon

We've been here over a year now! I can hardly believe it! Dreamwidth's been pretty good, I'd say, with almost no downtime to speak of and all that! Anyway... how is your spring going? Or I guess it's almost summer, isn't it? Hopefully it's been well! I've been catching up on work and new movies, all very exciting stuff, I'm sure.

Enjoy part 353!

Special snowflake secret maker didn't think this through. How is she going to get brownie points from misogynists in the future when she's anonymous?

Did she post this with her username attached?

"men in fandom aren't as pretentious"

lmfao, joke of the century right there

also what makes shameless porn better than porn that's not shameless? why does it even matter if it's shameless or not, as long as it's good

don't be so pretentious about porn

and i'm just a novice at this but
'ashita mo' means 'tomorrow, too'

'a, shita mo' seems like it would translate to 'oh, down below, too'

I usually love to talk about my favorite hated epithets and the prevalence of bruder in an otherwise all english language fic, so I'll try to find new material.

It's kind of subjective and I don't know if I will succeed in explaining this well, but it's been bothering me more and more lately. Some fics seems to go through an info dump phase before settling into the story, kind of like, Character x sat on his bed and thought about what a great day it had been. He had done X, Y, and Z, and everyone laughed and his jokes.

Sometimes the writing smooths out and it turns out to be a good fic. And I feel kind of bad about how much it annoys me, because I know how hard beginnings can be to write. But my patience for how long I can take it before opting out is getting less and less. (I hope this made some sort of sense, please ignore me if not.)

There's something to be said for a good 'hook' to a fic, that's for sure.

I don't like info-dumps when it's an AU of some variety and it's explaining all properties of the built world myself. If it's too much exposition I'm basically gone.

probably because there was so much new content at the time this was posted that some of us didn't get to absorb it
is that a problem?

thank you anon!!

Standard stuff (overuse of epithets, written accents), and I have a baseline for how poor the grammar and spelling can be before I leave.

Other than that, I don't much like the fics where Germany being Holy Rome with amnesia is just smoothed over like that, it's kind of idiosyncratic but I really don't like the way it's taken in a lot of fic- as an instant-Gerita button if they weren't together before, or as something both of them would accept without questioning either their own attraction towards each other (in Italy's case, "am I attracted to Germany or Holy Rome", and in Germany's, "am I attracted to Italy or is this residual feelings from Holy Rome") or asking a lot of people why nobody fuckin' told them anything about this. Or both.

Also, if the half of a pairing who's more the bottom in fanon is topping, making that one suddenly super-seme super-manly because there's no way anyone can top otherwise.

i understand that
even fanfic should 'show, not tell' as much as possible, because while some exposition can help, too much 'tell' is just boring

ah, that bit about Germany being HRE with amnesia, I agree that I dislike it when it's smoothed over! (and Gerita is one of my otps, too.)

it's such a significant thing for them both that it feels out of character for them to not have at least slightly more dramatic reactions to that once they find out about it.

When pairings I don't like are in the background and weren't announced in advance. Brief mentions are fine because it wouldn't be fair to tag a fic with a pairing if it's only referred to once or twice, but once the characters start getting scenes all to themselves or talk about their relationship "on screen", tag that shit.

+1

(Anonymous) 2014-06-20 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
and that's half of what i like about this pairing's potential.
if it's not there, why am i reading? i'm not.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-20 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
*if it explicitly mentions this issue, yet it just glides over it like it's nothing

obviously i won't refuse to read a gerita fic if it doesn't have this kind of development

I'm not going to read your story if it's not broken down into proper paragraphs, no matter how good it is. I'm sorry.

Also, I'm not a huge fan of onomatopoeiae, I get really annoyed when serious or semi-serious fics start using "kolkolkol", "honhonhon", "fusosososo" and "kesesese". I have no idea why I find them so iritating, but yeah.

In my experience, those things go hand in hand with really superficial characterization. Like, the author doesn't really know how to write France in character, so they throw in "honhonhon" because they think it makes their dialogue sound better.

Or alternatively, it's a really old fic because if I remember right, using those was pretty common even in serious fics around 2009 or so.

When asian people wear European historical clothing it's fine, but when white people wear Asian historical clothing it's cultural appropriation and/or weebishness.
