part 353 whalers on the moon

We've been here over a year now! I can hardly believe it! Dreamwidth's been pretty good, I'd say, with almost no downtime to speak of and all that! Anyway... how is your spring going? Or I guess it's almost summer, isn't it? Hopefully it's been well! I've been catching up on work and new movies, all very exciting stuff, I'm sure.

Enjoy part 353!

san francisco to vote on safety net for golden gate bridge

(Anonymous) 2014-06-26 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
For decades, the board had explored various options aimed at stopping the jumpers, from a 9-foot tall barbwire fence to a laser beam that would zap people if they climbed over the edge — something that was ultimately ruled out as too dangerous. The one idea that kept coming up again and again was a net — which more than four decades later is what bridge officials have finally settled on.

On Friday, the board will consider a $76 million plan to install a steel safety net that would extend from the bridge 20 feet below and 20 feet from the side of its span. Made of stainless steel cable painted the same color as the bridge, the net would collapse slightly if someone were to fall in, making it difficult for a person to exit without assistance. But many hope the mere presence of a net will dissuade people from jumping at all. They point to evidence of how barriers have worked at other locations once known as suicide hot spots, like the Harbour Bridge in Sydney.

“Scientific evidence is overwhelming that having a deterrent reduces suicide because it is so often an impulse feeling for many people,” said Eve Meyer, head of San Francisco Suicide Prevention and an advocate of a barrier for 25 years. “It’s been proven that if you stop someone, most won’t try again. ... This is about taking away the ability to act on that suicidal impulse.”

Many officials are cautiously optimistic about Friday’s vote. But money remains a hurdle. The plan calls for the bridge authority to come up with at least $20 million to combine with $56 million in state and federal funding for the barrier. It’s not entirely clear where that money will come from, which some fear could throw a wrench in the vote. And there are also lingering concerns — though few actively voice them on the record because of fear of backlash — about whether the barrier will really work or just mar the beauty of a bridge that is a classic American landmark.

we had a bridge in my home town that was a "suicide bridge" for many years. they ended up putting up a large fence barrier around the edge. yeah it didn't look as nice but it went from at least 1 suicide a year to none.

Are you rooting for America? It's okay, Anon. Even if America loses, say, 1-0, Portugal will have to score 4 more goals to earn second place, and Ghana will now have to score at least 3 goals. And if Portugal scores more goals, Ghana will have to score even more.

If Portugal and Ghana don't score enough goals, America will advance, even if they lose against Germany.

The bridge would still look nice with a net, especially if it's the same color. It can be photoshopped out of pictures if people want and artists don't have to include it. Would people say the traffic on and around the bridge mars its beauty? I think that does more than a net would.

The money issue is a problem, though. Maybe there're some charities or anti-suicide organizations willing to chip in.

...but they wouldn't just stay only because of the money
and the presents, right?

Re: 2/2

(Anonymous) 2014-06-26 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, no, they'd stay because you're attractive and smell good. Money and presents are a perk.

You know, you can practice this advice on me!

Okay, I get it. That actual does sound pretty logically.

Attractive... that can be a little subjective,
but I guess it would depend on them...
