We've been here over a year now! I can hardly believe it! Dreamwidth's been pretty good, I'd say, with almost no downtime to speak of and all that! Anyway... how is your spring going? The nazi salute thing was 4 years ago..... I'm really saddened that that single unfortunate event still defines the hetalia fandom as a whole for some people. Those involved should be really ashamed of themselves and I hope they never ever do something like that again.

Twitter duped by trending 'anti-masturbation cross'

Hey, parents! Worried that your child is spending too little time basking in the divine glow of Christ and too much time basking in the divine glow of frisky me-time? Check out this “anti-masturbation cross,” a papoose-like contraption for children ages 5 and up that trended on Twitter last night along with the hashtag #StopSatan2014.

But is the “anti-masturbation cross,” with its complicated-sounding “papoose cross and arm immobilizer” combo intended to “safely secure a self-raping child,” actually real? Nah.

The photo is from the Facebook page Stop Masturbation Now, a tongue-in-cheek, parody anti-masturbation group that was apparently formed back in 2013 by professional prankster "Lonnie Childs," who previously duped the media with a press release for the fake anti-masturbation mascot Fappy the Dolphin. Back then, Childs was quoted as telling CNN: “What our organization does is designed to help make children and parents aware of the dangers of masturbation in and outside of the home. God willing, one day masturbation will be illegal.”

I kinda want to read a fic where the Netherlands or Belgium use diminutives in Dutch, and it made me think of how diminutives for the Hetalia names would work in Dutch.

Ususally it's just adding -je to the word or name of someone. Govert would become Govertje and Mogens would become Mogensje.

But other names require different suffixes. The diminutive of Tim would be Timmetje or Timpje for instance because "Timje" wouldn't really work.

Emma or Laura would become Emmaatje or Lauraatje. And Manon would become Manonnetje. Anri would become Anrikje I think. I've never heard that name before.

I don't know if English has this too, because I don't remember ever hearing/reading something equivalent to it anywhere. So yeah.

While you can use the usual "French" (français), "English" (anglais), "Spanish" (espagnol), "Italian" (italien), "German"(allemand) and so on to talk about languages, French also has a bit more poetic way to design them, if you wanna sound fancy and dramatic.

It goes more or less like this: "la langue de X" ("the language of X"), "X" being a very famous author in that language. They're usually standardized expressions, and so you have to know which author is associated with the language for it to really work.

For example, instead of the usual anglais (literally "English), you can say la langue de Shakespeare, which translates to "Shakespeare's language". The other ones I've heard used more often are, obviously, la langue de Molière ("Molière's language", which is French), la langue de Goethe ("Goethe's language", German), la langue de Dante ("Dante's language", Italian) and la langue de Cervantès ("Cervantes' language", Spanish). I think Pushkin is the author you're supposed to use for Russian, but I'm not sure, it might be Dostoevsky too.

This applies mainly to European languages I think, although maybe there'll be a standard poetic expression for Mandarin, Japanese or Arabic in the near future.

I heard Putin speaking German for the first time today, he sounded kind of soft-spoken to me (although I have like no German so hard to judge) and it's weird because he's soft-spoke in English too so now I'm wondering if he's soft-spoken in Russian as well.

Speaking of German, I don't care how many linguists and phonological inventories tell me Japanese has Ich-Laut I can't pronounce it to save my life. I know you're not supposed to study a dialect until you're proficient in the Standard but goddamn it Berliners and their Ik are so tempting to me at the moment. (Auch-Laut is a pipe dream at this point lol).

As for the bonus, I often wonder how Hetalia characters go through language change. Like does England still speak/understand Middle English? How do they know when to start adapting changes in their native language, because language change naturally occurs across generations not in one person changing their idiolect within their lifetime so how do nations tell the difference between fads/regionalisms and actual change they'll have to know later in life. When did Germany and Prussia learn Hochdeutsch for example!? What is Germany's native dialect anyway in that case, Berlinisch!!!?!? Does Prussia use Ik not because it's Berlinisch but because Proto-Germanic used Ik!?!?!?!?!

Okay that last one was obviously a joke but still. I want to knowwwww. Ugh.

ITT: Linguist thinks WAY TOO HARD about eternity and language change.

Maybe it was. It was a long time ago and I can't remember. But 6 years ago was 2008 and I don't think there was much fandom then because the anime hadn't come out yet. I wasn't in fandom until later 2009 after I saw the anime. I thought I was around when the disaster occurred, but I might just be remembering discussions about it.

Prussia going "Ik lieb dick."

I don't know what form Norway would use in his personal documents. In stuff intended for other people, it'd usually be Bokmål. But his personal writing... not sure. I think he'd feel very attached to Nynorsk, because it was based on spoken Norwegian dialects, unlike Bokmål which is based on Danish. But since Nynorsk is used by a smaller portion of the population, I'm not sure if he'd use it in his private writing.

Maybe a suitable answer is "his writing (whichever form he uses) would be very dialect-y" but then the problem is, which dialect? Argh! ... So Bokmål is the easiest option, but I love dialect-y Norway.

(Edit) Wait... I was overthinking it. Most of his private writing would be spellbooks, and they'd probably be such a mishmash of languages and dialects that only he'd be able to make sense of them.

Speaking of Nynorsk, oh man, I find it such a pain in the ass to try to learn it. Not recommend. I've been trying to read/translate stuff in it just for the hell of it, and it's... hard. So many words that aren't even in Nynorsk-English dictionaries, argh.

wouldn't it just start to sneak into their language gradually and wouldn't instinctive code switching come into play? Like for instance, think of slang on the internet, it just creeps its way into our vocabulary when it's cool, and sneaks the fuck back out when it's not.
