part 353 whalers on the moon

We've been here over a year now! I can hardly believe it! Dreamwidth's been pretty good, I'd say, with almost no downtime to speak of and all that! Anyway... how is your spring going? Or I guess it's almost summer, isn't it? Hopefully it's been well! I've been catching up on work and new movies, all very exciting stuff, I'm sure.

Enjoy part 353!

do you ever find a new fic author you like and their things are very good then suddenly start... declining in quality? because they begin writing for all the comments they receive, and in general rabid commenters tend to be awful authors and it's all the same trash and now the author you liked doesn't know how to characterization anymore and

this is rambling i should stop

wat

How does this have anything to do with money? These aren't sponsored posts from advertisers, just blogs that tumblr (very poorly in my experience) is recommending.

If they really wanted money, maybe they should provide the service their users actually want instead of adamantly adding and keeping "features" no one wanted or asked for.

they recommend blogs because they think it increases the likelihood you'll click on something new, and stick around tumblr for longer

granted, that seems redundant with the type of content and layout tumblr provides, but in the future they'll likely offer paid reccommendations for advertisers

[she'll never admit to it but she'll be holding that over your head for a while

AND THAT IS HIS OWN FAULT FOR NOT REMEMBERING THAT HER BERSERK BUTTON IS GETTING OTHER PEOPLE INVOLVED IN THEIR SHIT don't put something up in public if you don't want the public to see it.

There's always Twitter and Instagram, she'll live.]

[all she gets is a smiley face reply bc he gets the feeling that a lack of reaction and passive aggressive emotes would piss someone like her off beyond belief. Besides, IS HE SUPPOSED TO FEEL INSULTED BY IT??? And he by law, makes his conflicts eveeeeeeerybody's conflict. AND he's sure she has dreamt the same at least a few times before.

But yes, he has better things to do like UNFOLLOWING HER EVERYWHERE and PASSIVE AGGRESSIVELY privatizing all his pictures of her just to hurt her. He is dedicated when he is making a petty and childish point.

This is so stupid, he's not even sure why he has this vendetta against her besides probably shallow resentments and frustration, summer boredom, lack of things to do and stirring trouble is just his special talent]

they kind of did this before! Remember when there was a weekly "recommendations" page? and you could vote for blogs that you followed, and they would show up on recommendation pages with certain themes (history, fashion, etc)?

you used to be able to pay per week to appear as a spotlighted/featured blog.

Of course then they randomly took it away and kept all those people's money.

/diff i feel like francewanker got weird for a different reason though. like, she (?) would've been fine if it's just like she likes rapefic as a kink buuuuuut something about needing to /justify/ it because some fans complained led to her developing this obsessive kind of vendetta around her characterization of france. she should've just nipped it in the bud at the very very beginning by just saying this is kinkfic, don't like don't read, slap a big warning over all related material, end of story. but nope. bit sad because she's a good writer but everything's... off. like the problem is you get the feeling she's not doing it because it's a sex fantasy but rather because she has something against the character, and that's where... eh...

[THE IMPLICATION WAS YOU SUCK SO BAD SHE HAS TO FUCK HER FOR YOU. OH MY GOD HOW ARE YOU THIS STUPID!!!? but yes unresponsive passive aggression is a great way to piss her off, congratulations for taking a peek at Russia's playbook! But then again using glorified madlibs to insult her she shouldn't have expected creativity....]

enjoy squeezing your micropeen to your false sense of victory

[he can at least feel better in knowing he's gonna be seeing a lot of one her faults now: she's the queen of grudge holding.]

For two different authors.

One, I thought was too easily "pushed" by other people. In the way that commenters often get pushy and even a bit passive aggressively rude/overentitled... you know how that atmosphere develops. And this author always kept apologizing and catering to what the readers wanted when an apology or changing the story you want to write isn't really necessary in these cases and I feel like the result has been much more wishy-washy writing and characterization than they started out with, and really, really mushy tropes and hugbox themes versus the more interesting plots they used to come up with. It's like fruit juice that got diluted then mixed with kool-aid to satisfy whiny kids.

The other case, it was a combination of audience influence and the author being drawn further and further into out-there headcanons that started to contradict canon characterization to the point where the two characters they typically write about are hard to recognize sometimes. Essentially they've created OCs. And I feel like they're projecting really hard onto one of the characters. The writing itself is still good and sometimes interesting, but I have a hard time getting into it any more because it seems like original fiction yet simultaneously can't quite stand on its own, and if judging it as fanfiction it fails to connect at all.

While I'm here tl;dring, I might as well add my advice to writers, artists, any fandom contributors: be open to criticism, but please don't bend over backwards to cater your work to others. Listening to criticism doesn't mean you accept and obey anything that anyone says, or else you risk bowing to the lowest common denominator. Be true to yourselves, what YOU want in a story, how YOU interpret the characters, what YOU feel you are striving toward in writing, the themes and content that interest YOU or inspire YOU or turn YOU on. Look to canon to reevaluate your interpretations of the characters, don't look to whatever's the new trend in fanon.

I don't want to devalue the importance of audience feedback, because it's a great gauge for seeing whether you are conveying what you want to convey. But don't be ruled by it. Don't make it into the leash around your neck.

France wanker had other problems than writing fic. I followed her briefly on LJ on her account and she was a gold mine of problems that she was working through. Somehow all the attention though made her crack and, well, it wasn't pretty. There were a lot of [trigger warning] I still hope she gets the help she needs.

The juice analogy is a good analogy. Also, you're never going to make everyone happy. There's a balance between accepting criticism and letting people run over you to the point you're basically writing their ideas for them.

I was dubious from the title, but I think they do have some good points. However, at this point, the money's already gone; winning or losing can't change that. And even if they do win, I think people will (and rightly so!) still be angry and recognize that the way the money was prioritized was wrong and unethical.

/diff This isn't related to the francewanker issue, but while I appreciate you taking the courtesy to warn, it isn't very helpful as a warning if you don't say what you are warning for.
