part 353 whalers on the moon

We've been here over a year now! I can hardly believe it! Dreamwidth's been pretty good, I'd say, with almost no downtime to speak of and all that! Anyway... how is your spring going? Or I guess it's almost summer, isn't it? Hopefully it's been well! I've been catching up on work and new movies, all very exciting stuff, I'm sure.

Enjoy part 353!

I think that people who enjoy reading more complex literature (even though "adult" =/= complex ,and "young adult" =/= not complex) will do so along with enjoying simpler books like titles for younger readers, and people that wouldn't be reading more complex literature might not be reading much at all if they didn't enjoy the stories in young adult books.

and in the end who cares? It's not like you are obligated as an adult to read ~~*~*~complex~**~*~ litreature.

"I see now that dismissing YA books because you’re not a young adult is a little bit like refusing to watch thrillers on the grounds that you’re not a policeman or a dangerous criminal, and as a consequence, I’ve discovered a previously ignored room at the back of the bookstore that’s filled with masterpieces I’ve never heard of." -- nick Hornby

What if they just have lower reading levels?

You know what's embarrassing? Not reading at all.

I feel like if that's ALL they read, though, it's side-eye worthy.

This is as stupid as someone shitting on other adults because they play video games.

It's ironic that I have to say this, but they need to grow up.

one of these photos is really local to me and I'm very curious to know what the two women are doing 30+ years later.

Whenever I read things rallying against YA novels, the thought that inevitably comes to mind is "Well, what good Adult books are there that I should be reading?" and so far this is the only one that has begun to answer that, although it does so just barely. And if you look at the critics and rantings, there's not really an answer there either. Since Harry Potter, YA has been dominating the lists. And I think there's a reason for that. They're just good stories, and in my experience a lot of time they are not significantly different from adult books which is why they have mass appeal.

Also, in my personal opinion, if you get your outlook on life from Updike, you're kind of a tool and probably not that good of a person.

I honestly think the only difference a lot of the time is that young adult books don't have ~sex scenes~. As if sex scenes magically make adult books better than YA.

But maybe I'm just a butthurt asexual, who knows.

Maybe if the majority of adult books weren't trashy romance novels people would actually read them.

No, I agree, although I would tweak it a little. Just regular sex scenes are not enough- oh no! They have to be ~adulterous~ or ~supposedly-emotionless-but-ends-up-fucking-one-or-both-characters-up-anyways~ sex scenes. Because nothings more mature than cheating and a lack of self awareness leading to poor decisions, AM I RIGHT MY FELLOW ADULTS?

Top World’s Unhappiest Countries List

(Anonymous) 2014-06-07 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
A new study released this week by Gallup cited Iran as the country with the highest negative emotions — a close second behind Iraq.

Just last month, six Iranians were arrested in the country for dancing to Pharrell’s “Happy” in the country’s capitol, Tehran. They have since been released.

Giving Iran a run for its money — at least as far as unhappiness is concerned — are these other countries:

1. Iraq
2. Iran
3. Egypt
4. Greece
5. Syria
6. Sierra Leone
7. Cyprus
8. Northern Cyprus
9. Cambodia
10. Lebanon
