We've been here over a year now! I can hardly believe it! Dreamwidth's been pretty good, I'd say, with almost no downtime to speak of and all that! Anyway... how is your spring going? Or I guess it's almost summer, isn't it? Hopefully it's been well! I've been catching up on work and new movies, all very exciting stuff, I'm sure.

I think that people who enjoy reading more complex literature (even though "adult" =/= complex ,and "young adult" =/= not complex) will do so along with enjoying simpler books like titles for younger readers, and people that wouldn't be reading more complex literature might not be reading much at all if they didn't enjoy the stories in young adult books.

and in the end who cares? It's not like you are obligated as an adult to read ~~*~*~complex~**~*~ litreature.

Why on earth? Some people don't read any books. Some read just for light fun. Many read just fanfiction, and let's face it, most of it is terrible and read only because it's titillating.

At least they have found something to read they enjoy. At least they read something.

Whenever I read things rallying against YA novels, the thought that inevitably comes to mind is "Well, what good Adult books are there that I should be reading?" and so far this is the only one that has begun to answer that, although it does so just barely. And if you look at the critics and rantings, there's not really an answer there either. Since Harry Potter, YA has been dominating the lists. And I think there's a reason for that. They're just good stories, and in my experience a lot of time they are not significantly different from adult books which is why they have mass appeal.

Also, in my personal opinion, if you get your outlook on life from Updike, you're kind of a tool and probably not that good of a person.

I honestly think the only difference a lot of the time is that young adult books don't have ~sex scenes~. As if sex scenes magically make adult books better than YA.

But maybe I'm just a butthurt asexual, who knows.

No, I agree, although I would tweak it a little. Just regular sex scenes are not enough- oh no! They have to be ~adulterous~ or ~supposedly-emotionless-but-ends-up-fucking-one-or-both-characters-up-anyways~ sex scenes. Because nothings more mature than cheating and a lack of self awareness leading to poor decisions, AM I RIGHT MY FELLOW ADULTS?

Nah, I read both. So called adult books are usually too stiff and depressing, I don't know why.

And also, young adult's/children's books are usually written by an adult, so all that "childish" stuff is straight from their head. If they are allowed to write it, I'm also allowed to read it.
