part 353 whalers on the moon

We've been here over a year now! I can hardly believe it! Dreamwidth's been pretty good, I'd say, with almost no downtime to speak of and all that! Anyway... how is your spring going? Or I guess it's almost summer, isn't it? Hopefully it's been well! I've been catching up on work and new movies, all very exciting stuff, I'm sure.

Enjoy part 353!

“You Did Not Eat That” Calls Out Selfies of Good Looking People Eating Unhealthy Food

n the world of advertising, it is customary to show ridiculously good looking models with your products, in order to convince customers to buy them. This is true for the fashion industry just as it is for the food industry. The latter, however, often advertises for food that contains large amounts of sugar and other unhealthy ingredients–and as a matter of fact, most ridiculously good looking models don’t consume such food.

A new Instagram blog called “You Did Not Eat That” calls out images depicting healthy looking people consuming unhealthy looking food– be it advertising images, pictures of fashion bloggers or simply private snaps. The idea for this blog developed, when its curator–who prefers to stay anonymous–witnessed people in the fashion industry posing with unhealthy food, without actually consuming it.

As much fun as it is seeing those who merely pose with fast food, ice cream, chocolate and other things being called out, the habit of the ad and fashion industry to pose healthy models with unhealthy food items is deeply concerning, as it propagates that you can eat anything and still look as good as the people depicted. In the worst case, viewers of these ads might even be led to believe that ice cream, burgers and fries lead to a healthy physique.

or simply private snaps

I can understand calling companies on this, but taking private snaps and calling them out just doesn't sit well with me.

Yeah, same here.

I'm all for looking at staged photos in ads or from modeling companies, especially if they're talking about how ~much the models really eat gaiz~ but... not personal Instagram pics

+1

have these people never heard of "eating in moderation" and "portion control"?

as someone with a petite figure of a healthy weight, i can eat, say, a burger, fries, and even ice cream for desert one day and not really gain that much weight, as long as i continue to eat good meals and exercise well at other times. i also control my portions to make sure i'm not eating excessively, but i also naturally tend to go for smaller portions. do people like that ever consider this sort of thing and that it could apply to models as well?

I'm really concerned about the health of the people in those photos

but anon people who look that healthy obviously exercise

so they're healthy, right?

healthy people obviously cannot ever eat unhealthy foods! it sends a bad image!

that doughnut or cookie you're reaching for once in a while? put it back!

oh, right

no one can ever look healthy (or unhealthy) because of medical reasons!

trying to gain more weight isn't something that ever happens, either

well, that's stupid in quite a lot of ways!

have they seen what professional dancers eat? plenty of sugary junk food, and i bet it's like that for lots of athletes. or do they think you instantly gain 200lbs by eating a single ice cream bar because it's some kind of magical 'fat person food'

i guess we have to be thankful they didn't take it the step further to 'you ate that and threw it back up 2 minutes later'.
