part 353 whalers on the moon

We've been here over a year now! I can hardly believe it! Dreamwidth's been pretty good, I'd say, with almost no downtime to speak of and all that! Anyway... how is your spring going? Or I guess it's almost summer, isn't it? Hopefully it's been well! I've been catching up on work and new movies, all very exciting stuff, I'm sure.

Enjoy part 353!

Meme I'm so nervous for tomorrow ;a; I might be adopting a kitten from the shelter if all goes well. I've only ever had two cats from after they were kittens so I've never actually experienced a kitten before and I've done my research and going from experience but I'm still nervous ;a;

Any advice or anything I should keep in mind when I adopt?

A little advice.

Now, given I'm not as well versed with cats as Heracles... but I do know a thing or two about owning a cat. My mother did adore them, and not a lot has changed since then.

Some basic advice:
-Adopt based on your lifestyle. The breed and temperament of the cat will affect how they adapt to your home and work routines. So be definite in your choice.

-When you bring the kitten into your house, be patient. Keep it in a isolated part of the house for up to a week and a half, depending on how the kitten adjusts. This gives them adjust to the sounds, smells and just the feel of the house in general. Ideally, this should be where you keep it's litter box, food and water bowls, and where it will sleep.

-Know that it will take some time. Not all kittens will want to play all the time, and especially not in their first weeks. It takes time to build a bond. This will be helped if you're the one to feed them.

-And remember. Kittens become cats. They can't be cute and tiny forever. But they're still full of love, and comfort. A pet is for life.

Good luck, Anon.

You forgot: resign yourself to scratch marks all over, even in places you never thought existed.

BE PREPARED FOR AN OVERACTIVE KITTY RUNNING AROUND SCRATCHING EVERYTHING and it's up to you to train it to stop shredding things.

My old cat had 7 kittens and I had her as a kitten also and omfg

EITHER WAY IT WILL EVENTUALLY CALM DOWN but also play with it a lot so all that energy can go directly into playtime and it won't be as hyper? That's my experience. LOTS AND LOTS OF PLAY.

You will be a good owner!

PLAY WITH IT

PLAY WITH IT

always all the time whenever it wants. it's fun! also take lots of pictures (to remember how cute your baby was as a kitten)

and...maybe don't pick it up all the time/a lot, they may grow up to not like it at all (or maybe its just how they are, idk, i have an asshole cat who hates being held but some others who dont mind/like it!)
