We've been here over a year now! I can hardly believe it! Dreamwidth's been pretty good, I'd say, with almost no downtime to speak of and all that! Anyway... how is your spring going? Or I guess it's almost summer, isn't it? Hopefully it's been well! I've been catching up on work and new movies, all very exciting stuff, I'm sure.

when did fandoms all get so... weird about canon. like i feel like nowadays in many fandoms fans have this 'pick and choose buffet' attitude to canon, so that they're barely fans of the actual manga/show/book they're fans of parts of the source material that they agree with + parts of bullshit they made up that directly contradicts the source material.

now, i'm not against au fics or like bending/changing canon for the sake of fics of a certain tone or for the sake of smut or the sake of shipping - on the contrary, i am all for taking creative liberties to explore this or that in fanworks.

but. that's not canon which means that's not what really happened in the canon world and you can't just say "i don't buy this canon, therefore it didn't actually happen!"

a turk unhappy with turkey, understandable
someone who's mad nyo!england's uniform isn't strictly historic (cry moar)
someone who's mad there were historical costume anachronisms (seriously cry more)
egypt's name doesn't really work, either (join the club)
and someone complaining that lithuania and belarus dated but didn't get married married married (because never mind author's discretion)

meh

would've liked it more if it were framed as a discussion and a critique of canon (because i enjoy that, even if i know it won't change canon), but with 'holy bitch get out of my sight' and 'we don't buy it!' on the page, it's not really appealing to me
