part 353 whalers on the moon

We've been here over a year now! I can hardly believe it! Dreamwidth's been pretty good, I'd say, with almost no downtime to speak of and all that! Anyway... how is your spring going? Or I guess it's almost summer, isn't it? Hopefully it's been well! I've been catching up on work and new movies, all very exciting stuff, I'm sure.

Enjoy part 353!

where you're never sure if you're hearing firecrackers or gunshots

Depends on where you are

I remember once in college, my roommates and I heard what seemed like fireworks going off at night and we were like what holiday is this? Who's setting off fireworks? (It was nowhere near a holiday when you'd normally hear fireworks).

And then the next day we found out there had been a shooting near the school (our campus was inside the city) because we got a mass email about it reassuring us about it.

We laughed about it at the time, but I'm very glad to be living in a quiet and relatively low-crime suburb now.

No, July just means you're reasonably more sure the answer is firecrackers.

And it's kind of sad how ingrained this reaction is, like I remember hearing firecrackers in late October when I just moved to London and despite knowing full well there isn't that much gun crime here, it was the first thought that crossed my mind. And then I remembered Guy Fawkes Day was a thing.

in other words, murderers and assassins should time their hits for evening of july 4th. no need for a silencer.

(i am pretty sure i have seen this happen in a crime show already.)
